Mobile data in Switzerland: the roaming trap and how to avoid it
Switzerland sits in the middle of Europe, but it is in neither the EU nor the European Economic Area. That means the EU roaming rules do not apply there, and it is one of the most common places where travellers come home to a surprise phone bill.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Where travellers get caught
Near Geneva, Basel and Lake Constance your phone can switch between French, German and Swiss networks without you noticing, and every Swiss connection may be billed as roaming. Trains through the Alps and ski lifts are another classic: maps, messages and photo backups keep using data in the background.
If your plan charges for Switzerland, turn off background app refresh and automatic photo backup, or use a data plan that covers Switzerland from the start.

Is Switzerland included in EU roaming?

Why was I charged roaming near Geneva or Basel?
Close to the border your phone can connect to a Swiss network even while you are in France or Germany, and Swiss connections are often billed as roaming. Choose a network manually to avoid it.
