An eSIM for Interrail: data that crosses the border with the train

A rail trip through Europe crosses a border every few days, often in the middle of a journey. A data plan for one country stops working at the first frontier; what you need is one eSIM that does not care which country the train is in.

Why the Europe pack fits a rail pass

The 33-country Europe pack works in every country it covers with the same eSIM, so the phone simply switches to a local network when the train crosses a border. There is nothing to change in the settings and nothing to buy at the station. It includes the places where a phone plan from the EU does not roam for free: Switzerland and the United Kingdom, both common on rail routes.

Single-country packs are cheaper per GB, as the price list shows, but on a pass that changes country every two or three days they would mean a new eSIM for every stop.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Rail countries the pack does not cover

Some countries that rail passes include are outside the 33: Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Turkey. The Europe pack has no data there. If your route goes down to the Balkans or on to Istanbul, plan those days separately: offline maps and timetables downloaded before you cross, and Wi-Fi at the hostel.

The train along the French Riviera also stops in Monaco, which is not in the pack.

Signal on the train

On high-speed lines and in the countryside, coverage is good most of the way. Long tunnels and mountain sections, which are many in the Alps and in Norway, can drop the signal for a while; it comes back by itself. Download your tickets, seat reservations and the next city's map while you have a connection, so a tunnel never leaves you without the ticket the inspector wants to see.

How much data for a rail trip

  • 2 weeks, maps and messages, little video: 3 GB, or 10 GB if you post a lot.
  • 3 to 4 weeks with photos, video calls home and booking on the go: 10 GB.
  • A month using the phone as a hotspot for a laptop: 20 GB.

The 10 GB and 20 GB Europe packs last 30 days from the first connection. If you run out, you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code.

Questions
What is the best eSIM for Interrail?

One that covers every country on your route with a single plan. The 33-country Europe pack works across borders without changing anything, Switzerland and the UK included.

Does a Europe eSIM work in Switzerland and the UK?

Yes, both are among the 33 countries of the Europe pack.

Does the Europe eSIM cover the Balkans and Turkey?

No. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Turkey are not in the Europe pack.

Can I top up during the trip?

Yes. The new data is added to the eSIM already on your phone, with no second QR code to scan.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.
