Mobile internet in Spain: the easy way for visitors
Spain has fast 4G and 5G almost everywhere tourists go, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. What you pay for data depends on where your phone plan is from, and there are three ways to sort it out.

- Yes: Spain is in EU roaming, so a plan from an EU country usually works at no extra cost, within your operator's fair-use limit. If your plan is from outside the EU, it charges international roaming.

- When your phone first connects to a network in Spain. The QR code arrives by email within minutes.
Is roaming free in Spain?
- Phone plan from an EU country: yes, EU roam-like-at-home rules apply, possibly with a fair-use cap on data.
- Phone plan from the UK: depends on your operator since Brexit. Some include Spain, others charge a daily fee.
- Phone plan from the US, Canada, Latin America, Asia or Australia: usually roaming charges or a daily travel pass, which adds up fast on a one- or two-week trip.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage: cities, beaches and islands

Do I need a passport to get internet in Spain?
For a Spanish SIM card, yes: Spanish law requires ID to register prepaid SIMs. A data eSIM bought online needs only an email address.
Does the eSIM work in the Canary and Balearic Islands?
Yes. The Spain eSIM covers the whole country, including both archipelagos and Ceuta and Melilla, on the same networks.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
Most recent phones support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. It must be unlocked. Check your model on the compatibility page.

At home over Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly. It stays inactive until your phone connects in Spain, so you land with data.
