Mobile data in Copenhagen: one city, two countries for the day

Copenhagen is one of the few capitals where another country is a train or a ferry ride away. The city is easy to stay online in; what needs planning is that Malmö and Helsingborg are in Sweden.

Kastrup to the centre in a quarter of an hour

Copenhagen Airport is at Kastrup, close to the city. The M2 metro line leaves from the terminal and reaches Nørreport in about 15 minutes, and trains from the station under Terminal 3 reach Copenhagen Central in about the same time. Taxis wait outside Terminal 3, and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt work here through licensed taxi companies.

The ticket is the first thing you need data for. The Rejsebillet app sells single tickets and the City Pass, and the Rejsekort and DSB apps also sell tickets for the metro and trains. Rejseplanen plans routes across metro, train, bus and harbour bus. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: it connects to TDC or 3 as you land.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Cityringen, harbour buses and a city on two wheels

The M3 Cityringen line runs underground in a loop around the centre, and the M1 and M2 cross it. A metro ticket is also valid on the harbour buses, and the other way round, so the ticket in your app gets you across the inner harbour as well. If you want the route ready when you step off, load it before you go down to the platform.

Most of the centre is done on foot or by bike, and the cycle lanes are busy at rush hour. Set the route before you start rather than stopping at a junction to check the map, and let the phone read out the turns from your pocket.

Malmö across the bridge: Sweden, not Denmark

Øresund trains run from Copenhagen Central through the airport and across the bridge to Malmö in roughly 35 to 40 minutes. After the bridge the first stop is Hyllie, in Sweden, and from there a Denmark pack gives no data. Malmö and Lund are the most common day trips from the city, and they are what decides the pack.

If either is on the plan, even for an afternoon, the 33-country Europe pack covers Denmark and Sweden on one eSIM, with nothing to change on the bridge. If you are spending several days on each side, the other option is a Denmark pack and a Sweden pack, both installed at home, switching the data line once you are across.

Helsingør, Kronborg and the twenty-minute ferry

North of the city, coastal trains run to Helsingør, with Kronborg castle by the harbour and the Louisiana museum at Humlebæk on the way. All of that is Denmark. The ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg is not: the crossing takes about 20 minutes and lands in Sweden, where a Denmark pack stops working.

The strait is only a few kilometres wide, so on the Danish shore the phone may already see a Swedish network. If your own plan charges for Sweden, pick TDC or 3 by hand in the network settings until you board. With the Europe pack it makes no difference which side the signal comes from.

How much data for Copenhagen

A long weekend in the city, with tickets, maps and a few museums, fits in the Denmark 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days. A week with day trips up the coast is a 5 GB trip on a 30-day pack. Add Malmö or Helsingborg and the choice moves to the Europe pack: 3 GB for 15 days covers a light week, 10 GB for 30 days a heavier one or a laptop on the hotspot.

Whichever you choose, it is data only: your number, calls and WhatsApp stay on your usual SIM. The days start at the first connection, so you can buy up to 180 days ahead. The data calculator gives an estimate in five questions.

Questions
Does a Denmark eSIM work in Malmö?

No. Malmö is in Sweden, and a Denmark pack only gives data on Danish networks. For a day across the bridge, the Europe pack covers both countries.

Can I buy metro tickets on my phone?

Yes. The Rejsebillet, Rejsekort and DSB apps sell tickets for the metro and trains, and a metro ticket also works on the harbour buses.

When does the pack start if I land at Kastrup?

When the phone first connects to a Danish network after landing. Install it at home on Wi-Fi; installing does not start the days.

Does the ferry to Helsingborg count as Sweden?

Yes. Helsingborg is in Sweden, so a Denmark pack has no data there. The Europe pack covers both ends of the crossing.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
