Mobile data in Slovakia: Bratislava, the Tatras and the eastern border
Slovakia is in the EU, and it is the sort of country you end up leaving and re-entering by accident: Vienna is an hour from Bratislava and Budapest about two. All of that is inside the rule. The two things worth planning for are the mountains, where coverage genuinely fails, and the eastern border, which changed in 2026.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Vienna and Budapest are day trips, and the rule follows you
Bratislava sits on the Austrian border, so close that phones in the city can pick up a network from the other side without anyone travelling. Vienna is about an hour away by train, bus or boat down the Danube, Budapest around two. Austria and Hungary are both in the EU, so none of it changes what you pay — the only visible effect is your phone switching network and the country name on the screen changing. If you are doing this often, a plan that covers several countries beats a plan per border.
The Ukrainian border is now inside EU roaming

Slovakia borders Ukraine in the far east, and since 1 January 2026 Ukraine is part of the EU roam-like-at-home area. That is a real change: crossing there used to take an EU plan out of the rule, and now it does not. Near the border on the Slovak side the phone may attach to a Ukrainian network on its own, which before 2026 was worth avoiding and today is mostly harmless. Even so, check the country list of whatever data plan you carry, because an eSIM sold for Slovakia does not automatically work across the border.
Which eSIM works in Slovakia?
A Slovakia eSIM runs on the local networks, Orange (5G), O2 (5G). Two networks with 5G gives you a fallback where one of them is thin, which matters more here than in a flat country. Data only: your usual number stays on your own SIM.
Coverage: the High Tatras and the valleys
Bratislava, Košice and Žilina have strong coverage with 5G, and the motorways and main valleys are fine. The High Tatras are where it breaks down: the resort towns and the cable car stations are covered, but on the ridge trails, in the corries and on the passes the signal goes, on every network, and it goes exactly where you would most want it. Mountain rescue here is serious and much used. Download the route offline, tell someone where you are going, and do not count on calling from the ridge.
