An eSIM on a Europe cruise: what works in port and what does not at sea
A data eSIM works on a cruise the way it works anywhere on land: as soon as the phone picks up a land network in a covered country. Out at sea there is no land network, only the ship's own, and that is where the expensive surprises come from. Here is how to plan for both.
See the Europe packIn port: the eSIM connects like on land
When the ship docks, or sails close enough to the coast, your phone sees the same mobile networks as anyone standing on the quay. A travel eSIM for that country, or the Europe pack, connects to them and you have data for the day ashore: maps, tickets, messages, the photos you want to send home.
The Europe pack is the natural choice for a cruise because the itinerary changes country almost every day. It covers 33 countries with one eSIM, from 6,90 € for 3 GB and 15 days, and it keeps working from port to port without changing anything on the phone. A single-country pack only works in its own country, so on a cruise it is useful only for the days you spend in that one place.

Several countries on one trip? Same eSIM, same data, no swapping lines at the border.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works
- 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
- 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
At sea: the ship's network is a different thing
Once the coast is out of reach, many ships switch on an on-board mobile network linked by satellite. Your phone may connect to it on its own if roaming is switched on for your usual line. That network is not a land network of any country: the EU roam-like-at-home rules do not cover networks on ships and planes, and a home plan can be billed at international rates for every megabyte.
A travel eSIM does not cover the ship's network either. At sea, the ship's Wi-Fi package is the only way to stay online, and whether it is worth paying for depends on the cruise line's prices.
Three settings before you board
- Before sailing, switch off data roaming on your usual line, or set the phone to use the travel eSIM for data.
- Keep your usual line on for calls and texts only if you accept that the ship's network can charge them.
- Download offline maps of each port while you are on Wi-Fi, so the day ashore starts without data.
Which cruise ports the Europe pack covers
The 33 countries include the big Mediterranean and northern cruise stops: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Cyprus, Portugal, Gibraltar, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland, among others. The full list is on the Europe coverage map.
Some popular ports are outside it: Monaco, Montenegro, Turkey, Albania. On a day in one of those, the Europe pack has no data; plan that day with offline maps or the ship's Wi-Fi.
How much data for a cruise
You only use the eSIM on port days, so the data goes further than on a normal trip of the same length. For a one-week cruise with five or six port days, 3 GB is usually enough for maps, messages and social media. If you upload a lot of video or share the connection with a tablet, take 10 GB. The plan starts counting at the first connection in a covered country, not on the day you board, and you can buy up to 180 days ahead.
The data calculator works it out from your habits if you are unsure.
Does an eSIM work on a cruise ship at sea?
No. At sea there is no land network, only the ship's own satellite network, which travel eSIMs do not cover. The eSIM works in port and near the coast of covered countries.
How do I avoid roaming charges on a cruise?
Switch off data roaming on your usual line before sailing. The ship's network is not covered by EU roam-like-at-home rules and can be billed at international rates.
Is one eSIM enough for a Mediterranean cruise?
The 33-country Europe pack covers most Mediterranean ports with one eSIM. Monaco, Montenegro, Turkey and Albania are not included.
When should I install the eSIM for a cruise?
At home, on your own Wi-Fi, before you travel. Installing does not start the plan; the first connection in a covered country does.
Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.
