Is roaming free in Gibraltar?

• Plans from the EU and the EEA: no. Gibraltar left the European Union with the United Kingdom, so roam like at home does not apply and your operator charges whatever its international tariff says.
• UK plans: it depends on your operator. Some treat Gibraltar as part of their European or home zone, others do not, and it changed for several of them after Brexit.
• Plans from outside Europe: international roaming or a daily pass, as anywhere else.

The territory is tiny and the border with Spain is a street. Phones on the Spanish side of La Línea can latch onto the Gibraltar network without anyone crossing anything, and phones inside Gibraltar can sit on a Spanish network for the same reason. That matters on a bill: which country you are billed for depends on the network your phone chose, not on where your feet are. If you are only walking up to the fence, keep data roaming off, or pick the network by hand in your phone settings instead of letting it choose.

Which eSIM works in Gibraltar?

A Gibraltar eSIM runs on the local network, GibTel (5G). There is a single mobile network in the territory, so there is no second operator to fall back on: what you get is what it covers, and it covers a place you can walk across. Data only, so your usual number stays on your own SIM and calls and bank codes keep arriving. Note that a Gibraltar plan does not cover Spain, and a Spain plan does not cover Gibraltar — for a trip that mixes both, look at a plan that lists the two.

Coverage: the town, the Rock and the runway

Main Street, the port, the marinas and the residential areas are well covered, with 5G. Up on the Rock, in the Upper Rock nature reserve and inside St Michael’s Cave and the siege tunnels it drops, as it would in any cave. The road across the airport runway and the border queue are covered, which is exactly where your phone is most likely to hop between the Gibraltar and Spanish networks. How much data for Gibraltar?

• A day trip from the Costa del Sol or a cruise stop: maps, messages and the photos you send from the top of the Rock. The 3 GB pack is more than enough.
• A week staying in Gibraltar: 5 GB covers maps, photos and the usual browsing. Video calls and streaming are what use it up.
• Longer, or a trip that carries on into Spain: Gibraltar only sells the 3 GB and 5 GB packs, so the Europe plan is the one to look at, and it covers Gibraltar, Spain and the United Kingdom together.

Almost everything in Gibraltar is within walking distance, so navigation uses little. What adds up is uploading photos and video from the Rock and the views over the Strait. The data calculator gives an estimate in five questions.

Arriving on a cruise ship

Gibraltar is a regular stop on Mediterranean cruises, and ships berth at the cruise terminal close to the town. At sea the phone cannot reach land networks, and on many ships it can connect instead to the ship's own mobile network, which runs over satellite. EU roaming rules do not apply to those networks, and neither your plan nor a land eSIM covers them, so keep the phone in airplane mode, or with data roaming off, until the ship is in port.

Calls and emergencies with a data-only eSIM

The eSIM brings data, not a phone line. To book a table or a tour of the Rock, a call over WhatsApp or another app costs nothing beyond the data, while a normal call from your own SIM is billed as roaming outside the EU. Gibraltar numbers start with +350, so from a Spanish or any other foreign line they are international calls.

Since March 2024 Gibraltar has a single emergency number, 999, for police, ambulance and fire, with a short menu once you are connected to choose the service. It replaced the old separate numbers, 190 and 199. Emergency calls go through your usual SIM.

Prices for Gibraltar

Gibraltar data eSIMs: 3 GB for 5,79 € and 5 GB for 8,99 €. Those are the only two: a bigger plan for Gibraltar alone would cost more than the Europe plan that also covers it. The plan starts on the first connection in Gibraltar.
