An eSIM for work trips: data, expenses and your usual number

On a work trip the data has to be there the moment you land, the expense has to be easy to justify and your number has to keep ringing. A data eSIM takes care of the first two and leaves the third to the line you already have.

An invoice for your expense report

Every purchase comes with an invoice emailed by Stripe, with the VAT shown on it, ready to attach to an expense report. There is no account to open and no ID to provide: an email address to receive the QR and the invoice is all it takes.

Payment is by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe, so a company card works like any other.

One eSIM for 33 European countries

Several countries on one trip? Same eSIM, same data, no swapping lines at the border.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Buying for a team

One purchase can include up to 10 eSIMs, one per person, each with its own QR. Whoever organises the trip buys them in one go, keeps the invoice for that purchase and gives each colleague their own QR.

Each QR is for one phone, and once installed the eSIM stays on that phone: it cannot be moved to another. So each person should scan only their own, on the phone they are taking. Deleting it loses it, so ask the team to leave it installed until they are back.

Hotspot for the laptop

The hotspot is allowed, so your phone can share its data with the laptop for email, documents or a call when the hotel or venue Wi-Fi is not up to it. It works the same as with any data plan, as long as your phone allows it. The steps are in the hotspot guide.

A laptop gets through far more data than a phone: system updates, cloud sync and large attachments can empty a pack quickly. Pause automatic updates and syncing before you switch the hotspot on.

How much data for video calls

Video calls are what makes the difference on a work trip. Messages and email barely use anything; a daily round of video calls on the laptop through the hotspot uses many times more. Instead of guessing, enter your days, your video use and the laptop into the data calculator, which recommends the smallest pack that covers them.

If you run short, you can top up without reinstalling anything: the new data is added to the eSIM already on your phone. Prices for Europe, country by country, are on the price list.

Your work number stays on your usual line

The eSIM carries data only: no number, no calls, no SMS. Your usual line stays in the phone, so calls and texts to your work number keep arriving, and WhatsApp and iMessage keep your usual number while they use the eSIM's data. More on that in how to keep your WhatsApp number.

Set the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch off data roaming on your usual line, so no data is charged to it. Whether calls on your usual line cost extra abroad depends on your carrier, so check before you go. The dual SIM guide shows the settings.

Before you leave

  • Install the eSIM at the office or at home, on Wi-Fi: installing does not start the plan.
  • Buy it whenever it suits you: up to 180 days ahead, and it starts at the first connection in the destination.
  • File the invoice email with the rest of the trip's receipts.
  • Check that every phone in the team supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier, on the compatibility page.
Questions
Do I get an invoice for an eSIM bought for a work trip?

Yes. Every purchase comes with an invoice emailed by Stripe, with the VAT shown on it.

Can I buy eSIMs for my whole team at once?

Yes, up to 10 in one purchase. Each person gets their own QR and installs it on their own phone.

Can I use the eSIM on my laptop?

Yes, through your phone's hotspot. A laptop uses much more data than a phone, so size the pack with the data calculator.

Will I still get calls on my work number?

Yes. The eSIM is data only and your usual line stays in the phone for calls and texts. Check with your carrier what it charges for calls abroad.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
