A road trip through Europe: keeping navigation online across borders
On a road trip the phone is the map, the traffic report and the way to find tonight's room. The data side is simple as long as you know where the borders are, including the ones you can drive across without noticing.
See the Europe packOne country or several
If the whole drive stays in one country, a country pack is the cheapest option: the Ring Road in Iceland, the Scottish Highlands or a loop through Andalusia never leave their country. As soon as the route crosses a border, the 33-country Europe pack is the one that keeps working without changing anything, from 6,90 €.
A country pack stops carrying data the moment you leave its country, and on a motorway that can happen without a sign you notice.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Borders you can cross without noticing
On the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, the old coastal road between Split and Dubrovnik crosses a short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the Europe pack, so on that stretch you will have no data with either the Croatian pack or the Europe pack. Since 2022 the Pelješac Bridge lets you drive between the two parts of Croatia without crossing Bosnia, which is the easy way to keep the connection.
In the Pyrenees, Andorra is outside the Europe pack and has a pack of its own. Monaco, on the coast road between Nice and Italy, is not covered either.
Navigation needs less data than you think
Turn-by-turn navigation uses little data compared with video or social media. Download offline maps of each region before you set off and most of the route needs no data at all; the connection is then for live traffic, fuel prices, bookings and messages. Mountain passes and remote valleys can lose signal on any network, and offline maps are what keep you on the right road there.
How much data for a road trip
- 1 to 2 weeks with offline maps, messages and some social media: 3 GB.
- 2 to 4 weeks, with music streaming in the car or video calls in the evening: 10 GB.
- Sharing the connection with passengers' phones or a laptop: 20 GB.
Hotspot is allowed, so one eSIM on the driver's phone can give data to the whole car. Remember that every device shares the same allowance.
Do I need a different eSIM for each country on a road trip?
No, if all your countries are among the 33 of the Europe pack: one eSIM works across every border. A single-country pack stops working when you leave its country.
Will I lose data driving from Split to Dubrovnik?
On the old coastal road you cross Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum, which is not covered. Taking the Pelješac Bridge keeps you in Croatia the whole way.
Can I share the eSIM data with other passengers?
Yes, the hotspot works. All connected devices use the same data allowance.
Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.
