Mobile data in Bulgaria: the euro, three networks and no 5G
Bulgaria is in the EU, so a European plan works at home prices. Two things have changed or are worth being blunt about: the country adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, and none of the networks in our provider’s feed here carries 5G.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Let us be straight: it is 4G, not 5G
Our provider’s feed lists three Bulgarian networks, and none of the three carries 5G. All of them are 4G. For what a traveller actually does — maps, messaging, browsing, music, a video call, uploading photos — 4G is plenty and you will not notice the difference. But if you came expecting 5G because the phone box says 5G, better to know before you buy than after. If a 5G indicator is what you are paying for, this is not the destination for it.
Which eSIM works in Bulgaria?
A Bulgaria eSIM runs on the local networks, A1 (4G), Vivacom (4G), Telenor (4G). Data only: your usual number stays on your own SIM, so calls and bank codes keep arriving.

Bulgaria has EU neighbours and non-EU ones, and the difference matters on the bill. Greece to the south and Romania to the north are in the EU, so crossing changes nothing. Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey are outside the EU roaming area: there your operator charges its own international tariff. Near those borders a phone can also pick up a mast on the far side without you crossing, so if you are driving the Rhodope or Strandzha roads, check which network you are on.
How much data for a trip to Bulgaria?

- 5 GB: a week with maps, messages and photos.
- 10 GB: two weeks, or the coast and the mountains with video calls.

Prices for Bulgaria, now in euros
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, confirmed by the European Central Bank, so your card is charged in euros with no conversion and no foreign-transaction surprise if you are paying from the eurozone. It changes nothing about roaming, which EU membership had already settled, but it removes one small friction of a Bulgarian trip.

Is there 5G in Bulgaria on your eSIMs?

Does Bulgaria use the euro now?
Yes, since 1 January 2026. Your card is charged in euros, which changes nothing about roaming.
What happens if I cross into Turkey or Serbia?
Both are outside the EU roaming area, so your operator charges its international tariff. Greece and Romania are inside, so nothing changes there.
Do I need ID for a data eSIM?
No. A data eSIM bought online needs only an email address.
