Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

What 4G and 5G change in practice

For maps, messaging, email and social media the difference is small — 4G handles all of it comfortably. 5G shows up on large downloads and when uploading video. If a network here is listed as 4G, nothing you normally do while travelling will feel slower.

Bulgaria is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are three networks here — A1, Vivacom and Telenor — and it is worth saying plainly: none of them appears with 5G in our feed, they all run on 4G. For maps, messaging and browsing that is plenty; if you were expecting 5G, better to know now.

Do I need an eSIM if I am coming from another EU country?

Probably not. Bulgaria is in the European Union and EU roaming covers your data. It is worth it if you are arriving from outside the EU or your plan has a small allowance.

Is there no 5G in Bulgaria?

In our feed, all three available networks appear as 4G. There may be 5G in the country on other operators, but not on the ones this pack uses. We would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.

Will it feel slow?

For normal travel use, no. 4G handles maps, messaging, email and social media without trouble. The difference shows when uploading video or on large downloads.

I am visiting Bulgaria and also Romania or Greece. Does this work?
