Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Bulgaria

  • A1 4G
  • Vivacom 4G
  • Telenor 4G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Bulgaria is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are three networks here — A1, Vivacom and Telenor — and it is worth saying plainly: none of them appears with 5G in our feed, they all run on 4G. For maps, messaging and browsing that is plenty; if you were expecting 5G, better to know now.

Before you buy

Black Sea fortnight, Sofia city break or a week in Bansko

In summer most visitors fly straight to the coast, into Varna or Burgas, for a week or two around Sunny Beach, Nesebar or Sozopol. For a fortnight of maps, messaging and beach photos, the 5 GB for 30 days is the comfortable size; 3 GB covers a lighter week. A city break in Sofia with a day trip to the Rila Monastery or Plovdiv fits in 3 GB, and in winter the same pack covers a ski week in Bansko or Borovets. Driving across the country, from Sofia through Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo to the coast, keeps navigation running all day: take 10 GB.

The 20 GB is for a month based in Sofia or Plovdiv, working from a laptop over the phone's hotspot. Whichever you choose, the days start at the first connection in Bulgaria, so you can buy and install it weeks before the flight.

Istanbul, Ohrid or Thessaloniki next: what crosses with you

Bulgaria sits where several routes split, and the packs do not follow all of them. Greece and Romania are among the 33 countries of the Europe pack, so a trip that continues to Thessaloniki or Bucharest can run on a single Europe eSIM from start to finish.

Turkey, North Macedonia and Serbia are outside both this pack and the Europe one. The bus or train to Istanbul, a detour to Lake Ohrid or a drive to Belgrade each needs that country's own pack: Turkey, North Macedonia or Serbia. Buy them together before you leave. A phone keeps several eSIMs installed, and at each border you only change which one carries data.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Bulgaria. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

Questions

Travelling to Bulgaria, answered

I am on a UK plan. Do I need it in Bulgaria?

It depends on your plan. Since Brexit, UK operators are not bound by the EU roaming rule, so some still include Bulgaria and others charge a daily fee. If yours charges, this pack covers the stay at a fixed price.

Is there no 5G in Bulgaria?

In our feed, all three available networks appear as 4G. There may be 5G in the country on other operators, but not on the ones this pack uses. We would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.

Can the whole family share the data at the beach apartment?

Yes, the hotspot is included, so other phones or a tablet can connect to yours. They all draw on the same allowance, so for a family sharing one connection for two weeks the 10 GB is the safer size.

I am visiting Bulgaria and also Romania or Greece. Does this work?

No, this one covers Bulgaria only. The 33-country Europe pack includes all three.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
