Mobile data in Bruges: the station, the coast and the Dutch border
Bruges has no airport, so nearly everyone arrives by train, or by cruise ship at Zeebrugge. The city is small and walked, which leaves the phone with two jobs: the connections, and the borders waiting at either end of the Belgian coast.
At a glance
- Does an eSIM work in Belgium?
- Yes. It connects to Proximus, Orange, Base (5G).

- For a one-week trip
- 5 GB for 30 days: 6,29 €.
- Does an EU phone plan work there?
- Yes: Belgium is in EU roaming, so a plan from an EU country usually works at no extra cost, within your operator's fair-use limit. If your plan is from outside the EU, it charges international roaming.
- When does the plan start?
- When your phone first connects to a network in Belgium. The QR code arrives by email within minutes.
By train from Brussels, then a bus or a walk
The usual way in is a flight to Brussels and a train. The station under Brussels Airport sells tickets to Bruges, and the journey usually involves a change at one of the Brussels stations onto an intercity towards Ostend, Knokke or Blankenberge. The SNCB app shows the connection and the platform. Bruges station is outside the old centre, about 20 minutes' walk from the Markt, and De Lijn buses marked Centrum go there; you can pay on board with a contactless card.
The eSIM connects on Proximus, Orange or Base as the plane lands, so the train is booked before the bags arrive.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Cruise days: Zeebrugge to the Markt
Cruise ships dock at Zeebrugge, on the coast. Many lines run a shuttle to Blankenberge, where the drop-off faces the station and trains reach Bruges in under half an hour. Taxis also wait at the port gates, and the coast tram stops in Zeebrugge.
A day ashore is short, so the phone is mostly the train back and the time the ship sails. At sea the eSIM does not work on the ship's own network; it starts once the ship is in port and the phone finds a Belgian network. The cruise guide covers the rest of the route.
The coast tram, from one border to the other
De Lijn's coast tram runs about 67 km along the whole Belgian coast, from Knokke-Heist near the Dutch border to De Panne near the French one, with Ostend halfway. From Bruges, trains reach it at Blankenberge, Ostend or Knokke.
At both ends the phone can catch a neighbouring country's network: Dutch around Knokke, French around De Panne. On a Belgium pack that means no data even though you have not left Belgium. If it happens, turn off automatic network selection and choose Proximus, Orange or Base by hand. The beach in between is all Belgian coverage.
Ghent by train, Sluis by bike
- Ghent: a short train ride, still in Belgium, so the Belgium pack covers it.
- Damme: a flat ride along the canal from Bruges, also in Belgium.
- Sluis: further along the same canal path, just over the border in the Netherlands.
Sluis is the one that changes the pack. The Netherlands is outside the Belgium pack, so on the bike ride the data stops at the border; the 33-country Europe pack covers both countries. For trains on to Antwerp, Lille or Amsterdam from the capital, see the Brussels guide.
Bruges in gigabytes
Bruges is small enough that the 3 GB Belgium pack, valid 15 days, covers two days of canals and the belfry plus a train to Ghent. For a week that adds the coast tram and a couple of beach towns, take 5 GB for 30 days; the 10 and 20 GB packs suit longer stays or a laptop on the hotspot.
If Sluis or a day in the Netherlands is on the list, the Europe pack comes in 3 GB for 15 days or 10 and 20 GB for 30. The eSIM is data only: your own SIM keeps your number, and WhatsApp keeps working with it. Days count from the first connection, and the Belgium page has the rest of the country.
Is there a train from Brussels Airport to Bruges?
Yes, from the station under the terminal, usually with a change at one of the Brussels stations. The SNCB app shows the connection.
How do I get from Bruges station to the Markt?
On foot in about 20 minutes, or on a De Lijn bus marked Centrum. You can pay on board with a contactless card.
Does the Belgium eSIM work in Sluis?
No. Sluis is in the Netherlands. The Europe pack covers Belgium and the Netherlands on one eSIM.
Why does my phone show a Dutch network in Knokke?
Knokke is next to the border, and the phone picks the strongest signal. Select Proximus, Orange or Base manually to stay on a Belgian network.
