Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

From the capital you can be in another country in half an hour, and from the borderlands in minutes. Germany, France and Belgium are all in the EU, so nothing happens to what you pay: roam like at home covers all four. What does happen is that the phone hops between networks as you move, sometimes attaching to a mast across the border while you are still in Luxembourg. That is normal and free here. It is worth knowing only so you do not panic when the operator name on screen turns German.
Coverage itself is rarely the problem. Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette and the motorway corridors are well served with 5G, and the country is small and densely covered, so real dead spots are few: the ones that exist are in the deep valleys of the Moselle and in the Ardennes to the north, where the terrain, not the operator, is what blocks the signal.
Free transport does not mean you can go offline
Public transport in Luxembourg has been free nationwide since 2020: buses, trams and the train in second class, with no ticket to buy. That removes the usual traveller problem of needing data to open a ticketing app at the stop. What it does not remove is everything else: live timetables, which platform, which bus, route changes and walking directions all still need a connection, and on a network you do not know, offline maps are the difference between catching a free bus and watching it go.
