Skiing in the Alps: eSIMs, Borders and Mountain Safety

In the Alps, crossing a ski-area boundary is not necessarily the same as crossing a national border. Zermatt and Cervinia connect Switzerland with Italy; Portes du Soleil spans France and Switzerland; Sellaronda stays entirely in Italy. Those distinctions affect roaming, route planning and emergency arrangements. Before skiing, establish which country you're in, which lifts connect your route, and how to get help without assuming mobile data will be available everywhere.

Three famous ski circuits, three different situations

Ski areaCountries and practical consequence
Zermatt–CerviniaSwitzerland and Italy. The Matterhorn ski connection links Zermatt with Cervinia and Valtournenche. Check the official lift-status page and the last available connection back to your starting side.
Portes du SoleilFrance and Switzerland. The network includes destinations such as Châtel, Avoriaz, Morgins and Champéry. The live website shows lifts, piste openings, maps and weather information; a link may be unavailable on a particular day.
SellarondaItaly only. The circuit runs around the Sella massif through Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa. It crosses ski areas and valleys, not an international border.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Zermatt and Cervinia: the return connection matters most

The most important detail of a Zermatt–Cervinia day is not simply whether the cross-border link is open in the morning. It is whether you can return before the last connection, taking account of weather, lifts and the time needed to ski back. Zermatt Bergbahnen publishes lift status, piste information and specific details for the link to Italy.

Check the operator's information before starting, again before crossing, and before committing to your return route. Do not treat a map line as a guarantee that a lift will operate all day. A closure may leave you on the other side of an international border, with a much more complicated journey back to your accommodation.

Save the name of your starting lift station and the emergency meeting point. Use official resort staff if you are uncertain about the last safe return.

Portes du Soleil and Sellaronda: follow the live map

Portes du Soleil's official live service provides resort-level piste and lift status, webcams and road information. This is more useful for deciding whether to cross into Switzerland than relying on an ordinary road map. If you are skiing from Châtel towards Morgins or from the Avoriaz sector towards the Swiss side, identify the lifts needed for the return before departing.

Sellaronda presents a different risk: it has no international crossing, but a closed lift can still interrupt the circuit. Dolomiti Superski distinguishes the orange clockwise route from the green anticlockwise route. Its official guidance recommends starting before 10:00 and reaching the final pass by 15:30; those are planning recommendations, not a promise that the circuit is passable.

Consult the MyDolomiti information and current lift reports. Leave a margin for delays rather than trying to finish the complete circuit on the final lifts.

Switzerland is outside EU roaming rules

Switzerland is not an EU or EEA member, so the EU's normal roam-like-at-home framework does not automatically apply there. This can matter even if you intend to ski mainly in France or Italy: near a border, a phone may connect to a network on the other side. The exact charges depend on your original mobile contract, not on the geographical position shown on your ski map.

Snoozim's Europe pack explicitly includes Switzerland among its 33 countries. That is different from assuming your primary SIM includes Swiss roaming. To reduce the chance of unexpected data usage on your primary line, check your phone settings, select the Snoozim eSIM for mobile data and review the primary SIM's roaming settings.

Emergency numbers in the Alpine countries

CountryOfficial emergency contacts and notes
France112 is the European emergency number. Alert ski patrol or lift staff when practical and give the exact piste, lift or landmark.
Italy112 is the general emergency number; official Italian visitor information also lists 118 for medical emergencies in applicable arrangements. Follow the local resort's rescue instructions.
Austria140 is the mountain rescue number; 112 is also available. Austria's mountain rescue service advises providing the precise location and circumstances.
Switzerland1414 reaches Swiss Air-Rescue Rega for helicopter rescue; 112 is the general emergency number. Use resort rescue services where appropriate.

The emergency limitation of a data-only eSIM

Snoozim supplies mobile data only: no phone number, conventional voice calls or SMS. WhatsApp can use that data while an internet connection is available, but it is not a substitute for an emergency call. Do not assume Snoozim alone can place a call to 112, 140 or 1414.

Before skiing, establish what voice-call capability your phone retains and where the resort's rescue points are located. Save the emergency number for the country you will actually be skiing in, not just the country where your hotel is located.

In an emergency, stop in a safe position, contact ski patrol or the appropriate emergency service, describe the injury and give a precise piste, lift, landmark or coordinates. Do not leave an injured person solely to search for a better data connection.

GB choice, offline preparation and Snoozim setup

For a short ski weekend using downloaded piste maps, occasional messaging and lift checks, 3 GB can be a reasonable allowance. For four or five days, consider 5 GB; for a full week with regular updates and sharing, 10 GB gives more room. Consider 20 GB for longer stays, frequent video uploads or repeated hotspot use. These are practical planning tiers, not verified averages of skiing-related consumption.

Download official resort maps, check the last return lift, charge your phone and keep it protected from moisture and impacts. See using your phone on a ski trip and offline maps.

For Snoozim, verify an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone on the compatibility page, install the QR emailed within minutes at home using Wi-Fi, and on arrival choose its line for mobile data with data roaming enabled. The plan starts on first connection at the destination. A Europe pack works across included countries, not Andorra; a national pack stops outside its country. Hotspot sharing is available, and a top-up adds data to the same eSIM.

Questions
Can I ski from Switzerland to Italy with one Snoozim Europe pack?

The Europe pack includes Switzerland and continues providing data when crossing between included countries. But ski-lift access and mobile connectivity at any particular slope cannot be guaranteed; check the official cross-border lift status.

Does Sellaronda cross into another country?

No. Sellaronda links ski areas around the Sella massif entirely within Italy. You still need to check which lifts are operating and allow enough time to complete the circuit.

Can I call mountain rescue with Snoozim?

Snoozim does not provide conventional phone calls or SMS. Arrange access to emergency voice calling independently and know the relevant local number: for example, 112, Austria's 140 or Switzerland's Rega 1414.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
