Mobile internet in Marrakech

In Marrakech the phone is how you find the riad, agree a pickup with the driver and get back through the souks after dark. The Morocco eSIM connects to Orange Morocco and is data only, so WhatsApp keeps your usual number for messages with the riad.

From Menara to the medina gate

Marrakech Menara airport is close to the city. The ALSA line 19 airport bus stops just outside the terminal and loops through the Hivernage, the medina near Jemaa el-Fna and Gueliz. Taxis are the other option, with an official counter at the airport selling fixed fares; if you take one outside it, agree the price before you get in.

Most of the medina is closed to cars, so any taxi or transfer stops at the nearest gate, often Bab Doukkala or near the Koutoubia, and someone from the riad walks you the last stretch. Before you fly, ask the riad which gate to use and save its pin and phone number. Once you have data, a WhatsApp message with your location saves a lot of waiting at the gate.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Souks, GPS and getting around

Inside the medina the lanes are narrow, some are covered, and GPS can drift or lose you between high walls. Download the offline map before you go, drop pins on your riad and on a couple of landmarks such as Jemaa el-Fna, and use them to head back rather than following a route turn by turn. Outside the walls, Gueliz and the Hivernage have wide avenues where the map behaves normally.

Petits taxis cover trips inside the city. Ride-hailing apps operate in Marrakech, but their status is disputed by the taxi unions, so ask your riad what works before relying on one, and keep the riad's number handy for the way back.

Agafay, the High Atlas and Essaouira

The Agafay desert, a stony plateau about 30 km south of the city, is the usual short desert night from Marrakech; ask the camp whether it has mobile signal or only wifi, and save the pickup details before you leave. Imlil, the base for Toubkal, is around an hour and a half away by road, and the Ouzoud waterfalls, about 150 km off, make a long day trip.

Essaouira is two and a half to three hours by CTM or Supratours bus. For Casablanca, Rabat, Fès or Tangier, ONCF trains leave from Marrakech station, and the ONCF Voyages app sells e-tickets, Al Boraq high-speed seats included. All of this is Morocco, so the same pack covers it. If you fly home through Spain, the Spain eSIM covers the stopover.

Which pack for Marrakech

Three or four days in the medina, with riad wifi in the evening, fit the 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days. A week that adds a night in Agafay, a day in the Atlas and a bus to Essaouira means more maps and photos away from wifi: the 5 GB pack, valid for 30 days, is the comfortable size. If you share data with someone travelling with you, take 10 GB; the hotspot is included.

Install the eSIM at home over wifi. It starts counting on its first connection in Morocco, not when you buy it, and you can buy it up to 180 days ahead. Top up the same eSIM if you run short. The data calculator sizes your own trip, and the packs are on the Morocco page.

Questions
Will Google Maps work inside the medina?

It loads, but GPS can drift in the narrow lanes. Save your riad as a pin and download the offline map so you can find your way back with or without signal.

How do I meet the riad's porter if the taxi cannot reach the door?

Ask the riad which gate to use, message them on WhatsApp from the taxi and share your location when you reach the gate. WhatsApp runs on the eSIM's data with your usual number.

Can I buy train tickets to Casablanca or Fès on my phone?

Yes, in the ONCF Voyages app, which issues an electronic ticket. Save it offline and check the departure station after booking.

Does the Morocco pack work if I fly on to Spain or Portugal?

No. It only works in Morocco; for Spain or Portugal you need that country's eSIM or the Europe pack.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
