Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Before you buy

Two or three weeks from Madrid: sizing a long-haul trip

If you are crossing an ocean to get here, the trip is rarely a weekend. A common shape is two or three weeks: Madrid, then the high-speed train south to Córdoba, Seville and Granada, and a few days in Barcelona to finish. That much navigating, ticket scanning and messaging home fits in 10 GB, and the pack lasts 30 days, so an extra week does not leave you short of days.

Shorter or lighter trips need less. A week in Barcelona or Madrid with a day trip or two is a 5 GB trip. Three or four days at a conference or on a long stopover fit in 3 GB, valid for 15 days. Take 20 GB for a month-long Spanish course in Salamanca or Valencia, or if a laptop runs off the phone. The data calculator turns your own plans into a number.

The Camino, Portugal and Gibraltar: where the Spain pack ends

The Camino Francés traditionally starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, on the French side of the Pyrenees, and the first stage only reaches Spain at Roncesvalles. The Portuguese Way from Porto crosses into Spain at Tui. A day trip from the Costa del Sol to Gibraltar puts you on another country's network, and Andorra, a few hours from Barcelona, is a separate country too.

For the first three, the Europe pack covers France, Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain on one eSIM, so a Camino or a Lisbon-to-Madrid route stays online at the border. Andorra is outside both the Spain and the Europe packs and has its own Andorra eSIM. If you never leave Spain, stay with the packs above, which include a 5 GB size that the Europe pack lacks.

Travelling to Spain, answered

My Camino will take about 35 days. Will one pack last?

Not on its own: the longest Spain pack runs for 30 days from the first connection. When it is close to running out, buy a second one; the QR arrives by email in minutes and you can install it on the wifi of any albergue.

Will my bank's text message codes still reach me?

They keep going to your usual number, not to the eSIM, which has none. Leave your own SIM switched on for calls and texts with its data roaming off, and set the eSIM as the line for data. Whether receiving texts abroad costs anything depends on your operator.

I am coming from the US or Latin America. How much do I save?

It depends heavily on your operator, but intercontinental roaming is usually billed per day or per megabyte at steep rates. A 3 GB pack for 15 days costs 4,29 €, which is often less than a single day of international roaming.

Does it work in the Canaries, the Balearics, Ceuta and Melilla?

Yes. The pack covers all Spanish territory, islands and autonomous cities included, on the same networks.
