Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

What 4G and 5G change in practice

For maps, messaging, email and social media the difference is small — 4G handles all of it comfortably. 5G shows up on large downloads and when uploading video. If a network here is listed as 4G, nothing you normally do while travelling will feel slower.

So how many GB for a week?

Switzerland has never been part of EU roaming and no Spanish plan includes it: it sits in the expensive tier, the same one as Andorra or Turkey. Without a travel pass, data is billed per megabyte at international roaming rates — this is where the unpleasant bills come from.

Why does my European plan not work in Switzerland?

Because Switzerland belongs to neither the European Union nor the European Economic Area. The regulation that made roaming free across Europe does not cover it, and operators class it in their most expensive zone alongside countries like Andorra or Turkey.

I am driving through Switzerland to Italy. Does that count?

Yes, and it is the most common surprise. The moment you enter Swiss territory your phone switches network and starts billing as international roaming, even in transit. If your trip crosses Switzerland, the 33-country Europe pack covers it.

Which networks will I connect to?

Sunrise and Salt, both on 5G. Your phone picks whichever has better coverage where you are and switches on its own — useful in mountain areas where one reaches further than the other.

Does it work in the valleys and ski resorts?

The eSIM uses the Swiss networks' own coverage, so it reaches where they reach. High in the mountains and in closed valleys the signal depends on the terrain exactly as it would with a local SIM: being able to hop between two networks helps, but it is not magic.
