Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Switzerland

  • Sunrise 5G
  • Salt 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Switzerland has never been part of EU roaming and no Spanish plan includes it: it sits in the expensive tier, the same one as Andorra or Turkey. Without a travel pass, data is billed per megabyte at international roaming rates — this is where the unpleasant bills come from.

Before you buy

Glacier Express yes, Bernina Express only to the border

The panoramic trains are where the choice between packs gets made. The Glacier Express runs from Zermatt to St. Moritz without leaving Switzerland, so the Switzerland pack covers the whole ride. The Bernina Express is different: from Chur or St. Moritz it climbs over the Bernina Pass and ends in Tirano, in Italy, and many travellers carry on from there to Lake Como or Milan. This pack stops at the border, so on that route the Europe pack below is the one that keeps working.

The same logic applies at the edges of the country: Geneva with a day in Annecy or Chamonix, Basel with Alsace or the Black Forest, Lake Constance with Lindau or Bregenz. Liechtenstein, a short bus ride from Sargans, also counts as another country, with its own pack. A trip that stays inside Switzerland, from Zurich to Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt, is exactly what the Switzerland pack is for.

Landing in Zurich, Geneva or Basel

Zurich and Geneva airports are on Swiss soil, each with a railway station at the terminal, so the usual plan works: install the eSIM at home, turn it on after landing, and the validity starts counting there. Basel is the exception. EuroAirport stands entirely on French territory, though it is run jointly with Switzerland. If you land there and want data from the gate, the Europe pack covers both sides; with the Switzerland pack, count on it once you are in Basel itself.

The pack is for anyone whose plan treats Switzerland as abroad: most plans from outside Europe, UK plans, and plenty of EU plans too, because Switzerland is outside EU roaming. The roaming map shows where that rule stops.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Switzerland. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Switzerland, answered

Does the Switzerland pack work on a day trip to Vaduz?

No. Liechtenstein has its own networks, FL1 and 7acht, and this pack only gives data on Swiss ones. If Vaduz is on the route, take the Europe pack or add a Liechtenstein one.

I am driving through Switzerland to Italy. Does that count?

Yes, and it is the most common surprise. The moment you enter Swiss territory your phone switches network and starts billing as international roaming, even in transit. If your trip crosses Switzerland, the 33-country Europe pack covers it.

I am staying in France near Geneva. Which pack do I need?

The Europe pack. A Switzerland pack goes quiet every evening when you go back to Annemasse or Saint-Julien, while the Europe pack covers both sides of the border on the same eSIM.

Does it work in the valleys and ski resorts?

The eSIM uses the Swiss networks' own coverage, so it reaches where they reach. High in the mountains and in closed valleys the signal depends on the terrain exactly as it would with a local SIM: being able to hop between two networks helps, but it is not magic.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
