A plan taken out in Japan is not covered by the EU rules that make roaming free inside Europe. Whether Spain is included, and at what price, is up to your operator: check it before you fly. This eSIM is a local Spanish plan instead, paid once, with no bill waiting when you get home.
Will your phone take it?
The iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and 17e bought in Japan have no SIM tray, and the iPhone Air has none anywhere: they only work with eSIM, so a local physical SIM card would not fit. Earlier iPhones bought in Japan, from the XS onwards, have both a SIM tray and eSIM.

Paying in euros
Prices are in euros and your card is charged in euros. Your bank converts from JPY at its own rate, and some cards add a foreign transaction fee: check yours if you want the exact figure in advance.
Install it before you fly
Install the eSIM at home on wifi, days or weeks before the trip. The plan does not start counting until your phone first connects to a network in Spain, and you can buy up to 180 days ahead. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online.

Do I need an eSIM for Spain if I travel from Japan?
Not necessarily: it depends on what your operator charges for Spain. If your plan does not include it, or the data allowance abroad is small, a local eSIM usually works out cheaper and you know the price before you go.
