Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Hungary borders seven countries. Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Romania are all in the EU, so nothing changes. Serbia is not, and it has its own regional roaming arrangement rather than the EU one, so your operator charges its own price there. Ukraine joined the EU roam-like-at-home area on 1 January 2026, so the eastern border no longer takes you out of the rule.
Which eSIM works in Hungary?
A Hungary eSIM runs on the local networks, Telenor Hungary (5G), Vodafone (5G). Data only: your usual number stays on your own SIM.
Coverage: Budapest, Balaton and the plains
Budapest has strong coverage with 5G, including most of the metro, and so do Debrecen, Szeged and the motorways. Around Lake Balaton it is good in the towns and thinner on the water. On the plains and in the small villages it varies, but the country is flat and well covered by European standards.
How much data for a trip to Hungary?
