New Year's Eve in Europe: Six Celebrations and How to Get In
A New Year's Eve countdown in Europe can mean a reserved viewing zone, a police-controlled square or a city-centre street festival. Arriving at the right landmark is not necessarily enough to get inside. London, Edinburgh, Madrid, Berlin, Vienna and Paris use different systems, and transport restrictions can matter as much as the celebration. Use this guide to plan admission, your journey home and the mobile data you might need.
Six celebrations with very different access rules
| City and celebration | How admission and access work |
|---|---|
| London — Thames fireworks | Official viewing areas are ticketed and divided into six colours: blue, red, pink, green, white and orange. Each has assigned gates; visitors cannot move between zones. |
| Madrid — Puerta del Sol | The famous midnight clock celebrations use police access controls and a maximum permitted attendance. The square may be cleared before reopening through security filters. |
| Edinburgh — Hogmanay Street Party | A ticketed event around Princes Street. Choose the East, West or South entrance shown on your ticket; the organiser states that the selected gate cannot be changed. |
| Berlin — Brandenburg Gate | The format varies. For the 2025–26 celebration, Berlin announced fireworks and limited free tickets requiring advance reservation. Never assume that arrangement automatically repeats. |
| Vienna — Silvesterpfad | A city-centre New Year's Eve trail with several entertainment locations. Vienna Tourism describes it as an open-air celebration with free admission to the trail. |
| Paris — Champs-Élysées | The city has organised a free public celebration facing the Arc de Triomphe, featuring projected images and fireworks. Access controls and the programme are announced for each edition. |

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

London: the colour of your ticket determines your route
London's official fireworks are not a walk-up event. City Hall divides the Thames viewing area into coloured sections, with numbered entrances and particular recommended stations. Blue is on the north bank facing the London Eye; green, white and orange are among the southern viewing areas. Travellers should consult the official event map rather than following a generic map pin for the London Eye.
The organiser explicitly says you cannot change viewing zones on the night. Friends must book the same zone to watch together. For the published edition, admission windows begin in the evening and close before midnight. Save the ticket, gate number and station recommendation in advance; river crossings and nearby streets may be restricted, so a short straight-line walking distance can become a longer journey.
Plan the return trip from your assigned riverbank, not from the attraction itself. Check live transport notices before leaving your accommodation.
Madrid and Edinburgh: security filters versus fixed gates
In Madrid, thousands of people gather around the Puerta del Sol clock for the twelve grapes. Municipal arrangements are published for the pre-countdown rehearsal and the main New Year's Eve celebration. The city's previous operational plan included clearing the square before controlled re-entry and checking capacity at security filters. The exact limit and access streets must be checked for your edition.
Do not assume Sol station will operate normally during the celebration. Confirm Metro and Cercanías arrangements and identify a walking route from another nearby station. Store your accommodation address outside the central cordon.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay works differently: the Street Party is ticketed, and East, West and South entrances have designated approach streets. The organiser lists 23:00 as the last entry time, with earlier gate closure possible for safety. Its safety guidance also warns about limited phone signal and recommends downloading tickets and agreeing on meeting points.
Berlin, Vienna and Paris: check the edition, not the tradition
Berlin's Brandenburg Gate is a recognisable meeting location, but the city's official announcement for the 2025–26 New Year's Eve described a specific fireworks event with advance registration for limited tickets. That is evidence of how one edition operated, not proof that every future event will have identical admission. Consult Berlin's current city announcement and transit service before arranging your evening.
Vienna's Silvesterpfad is a different model: a walking celebration spread across central locations rather than one mandatory viewing zone. The route has included sites such as Stephansplatz, Graben and the area around City Hall. Use the current official programme to decide which stop makes sense and how you will leave it.
Paris has staged a free countdown on the Champs-Élysées with projections on the Arc de Triomphe. The city publishes road closures, public access points and the evening timetable. Choose your exit side before the show, because major avenues and crossings can be restricted.
Getting home after midnight without guessing
- Check the official access map first; then plan transport to the correct gate, not just the event name.
- Save the last practical route to your accommodation and a second option involving a different station.
- Read the operator's special New Year's Eve timetable, including any station closures or diversions.
- Download tickets in the format the organiser accepts, and keep booking references accessible without email search.
- Agree on a meeting point outside the controlled event zone if you become separated.
- Charge your phone before leaving and avoid depending solely on live location sharing.
- For Madrid-specific preparation, see internet and mobile data in Madrid.
How many GB for a New Year's trip?
For a single evening plus a short city visit, 3 GB is a sensible planning allowance for navigation, messaging and checking official updates. Choose 5 GB for an extended weekend with transport searches, digital tickets and frequent maps. These are practical allowances, not promises about actual usage.
Choose 10 GB if the celebration forms part of a longer multi-city holiday, especially when you send photographs and videos frequently. Consider 20 GB if you intend to upload substantial video, make many video calls or use your phone as a hotspot for others. A countdown filmed in high resolution and uploaded repeatedly can change consumption significantly.
Downloading maps and tickets reduces unnecessary use. It does not solve local congestion: an active mobile data plan cannot guarantee that messages will arrive instantly in a densely packed crowd.
A data plan that follows your itinerary
Snoozim's Europe pack includes 33 countries, including the UK, Switzerland and Norway, and excludes Andorra. It continues working between included countries, unlike a single-country pack after you cross its border. Check eSIM support and phone unlocking on the compatibility page; the emailed QR arrives within minutes and is installed using home Wi-Fi. Validity begins on the first connection at your destination. Once there, use Snoozim as the mobile data line and turn on roaming for that line. WhatsApp keeps your normal number, but the eSIM itself includes no number, ordinary calls or SMS. Hotspot sharing and top-ups on the same eSIM are possible.

Can I watch London's official fireworks without a ticket?
Not from the designated official ticketed viewing areas. City Hall requires admission to the assigned coloured zone. Check its event information for the current arrangements.
Is the Madrid Puerta del Sol celebration ticketed?
It generally uses controlled public access rather than London's coloured ticketed zones. Capacity restrictions, security checks and transport arrangements are decided for each edition.
Will mobile data always work at midnight?
No. Dense crowds can make communication unreliable. Save your return route and agree on meeting points beforehand, regardless of which eSIM you use.
