How to pay for street parking with your phone in Europe

Use an app the city itself names: Madrid lists the apps approved for its regulated parking, Barcelona sells its green and blue zone tickets through smou, and Paris accepts PayByPhone, EasyPark and Indigo Neo. Register the car's plate exactly as it appears on its papers, keep mobile data on, because a session cannot start without a connection, and never pay through a QR sticker on a meter.

Madrid: approved apps, not a city app

Madrid's regulated parking, the SER, can be paid at the meter or through any of the apps the city has approved. Its list names ElParking, Telpark, ParkingLibre, EasyPark, Parclick, Bip&Drive and Mowiz, and the city keeps that list on its SER page. Some apps add a service charge of their own, separate from the parking fee, so the city suggests checking the conditions before you confirm.

Paying by app has one clear advantage: an option called Desaparcar lets you end the ticket early and pay only for the time you were parked. It is not available for tickets bought at the meter. The city also recommends checking that the app has placed you correctly before you start.

The fee itself depends on the car. Madrid adjusts the base rate by the vehicle's environmental classification in the Spanish traffic register, and a vehicle that is not in that register pays the base rate. A car registered in another country is not in it.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Barcelona, Paris and other cities

Barcelona's green and blue parking zones, Àrea Verda and Àrea Blava, have their own official site, which points to the smou app to get tickets. In Paris, the city lists PayByPhone, EasyPark and Indigo Neo as free apps for paying on-street parking, alongside the meters. In Ghent, the city says street parking is paid by card, by text message or through a mobile provider's app.

Then there are apps that work across borders. EasyPark says one account works in its home country and in many other European countries, and advises checking in the app whether it covers the exact spot where you are. That is the right habit with any of them: the city's own website is the place to confirm which apps it accepts, not a sticker or a flyer on the street.

Register the car before you need it

These apps link each payment to a number plate, so the plate has to be right. Paris is explicit: the registration you type must be strictly identical to the one on the registration certificate, and a mistake can lead to a forfait post-stationnement, the charge for unpaid parking. EasyPark warns that a foreign plate may trigger a format alert because it does not follow the local pattern; check it and confirm.

Do the setup on Wi-Fi at the hotel, not at the kerb with the engine running: download the app, create the account, add a card and the plate. With a rental car, add its plate when you collect it and delete it when you return it. If the app confirms your account with a code by text message, that code goes to your usual number, as our guide on getting SMS codes abroad explains.

No data, no parking session

EasyPark's help centre says it plainly: it is not possible to start a parking session without an internet connection. When digital parking does not work, its advice is to pay on the spot at the meter. Ending a session early, or extending it from a café, needs data in the same way.

On a road trip that means keeping mobile data working in every country you drive through, not only at the hotel. Our guides to using your phone as GPS in a rental car and to a road trip eSIM cover the setup. A Snoozim Europe pack works in 33 countries on one eSIM and switches network by itself at each border, so the parking app keeps its connection after the frontier.

Low emission zones are a separate permission

A parking ticket does not let you drive into a low emission zone. In Madrid, cars with foreign plates may enter the Distrito Centro zone once they are matched to the equivalent Spanish category, which means sending the city the vehicle's technical sheet, its registration document and proof of ownership, as far ahead of the visit as possible. Barcelona runs a metropolitan register of foreign vehicles for its low emission zones.

France uses the Crit'Air sticker for its zones, and the ministry says the only official site to order it is certificat-air.gouv.fr, and warns that the government does not send text messages offering it. Check the rules for each city on your route before you set off, on the city's or the government's own website.

Fake QR codes on parking meters

Fraudsters stick QR codes on parking machines that lead to fake payment pages. The Hague says it does not offer QR codes as a way to pay for parking at all, and advises never scanning QR codes on its machines. Ghent found stickers whose page copied EasyPark's branding, and says a QR code on a street parking machine asking for payment or bank details is never an official payment method.

The safe route is the one above: install the app yourself from the official app store, or pay at the machine with your card. Check that nothing has been stuck over an original code. If you have already typed card details into a page reached from a sticker, call your bank straight away. Our guide to QR code scams on parking meters and chargers goes further, and QR codes abroad has the checks for any code in a public place.

Which app pays for green and blue zone parking in Barcelona?

Barcelona's Àrea Verda and Àrea Blava tickets are sold through the smou app, as well as at the meters.

Do parking apps work without mobile data?

No. EasyPark says a parking session cannot start without an internet connection, and advises paying at the meter if digital parking does not work.

Is it safe to pay for parking with a QR code on the meter?

Treat it as a scam. The Hague says it does not offer QR payment for parking, and Ghent says a QR code asking for payment on a street meter is never official.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
