Moving to Spain: when to switch to a Spanish phone line

You do not need a Spanish number on the day you land. A data eSIM covers the first weeks while you find a flat and sort out paperwork, and your home number stays in the phone. Get a Spanish line once you have your documents in hand and people in Spain start calling you: a prepaid SIM needs only an identity document, and a contract cannot refuse a euro account from another EU country.

The first weeks: data now, number later

The first days in a new city are maps, flat viewings, messages with landlords and the university or employer, and almost all of it runs over the internet. A data-only eSIM installed before you fly gives you that from the arrival hall, with no shop, no ID and no address, while your usual line stays in the phone for calls and bank codes. Our guide on staying in Europe for months explains why it is a bridge rather than a long-term plan.

Use those weeks to collect what a Spanish line will ask for. Rushing into a two-year contract the first afternoon, before you know which neighbourhood you will live in or which operator covers it well, is the decision most worth postponing.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

What the law asks for a prepaid SIM

Spanish law requires operators that sell prepaid cards to keep a register of buyers. Under the additional provision of Law 25/2007, the buyer is identified with a document proving their identity, and the register records name, surnames, nationality, the document number and the type of document used. That is why every shop and every online sign-up asks for ID.

The text speaks of a document proving identity and records nationality; it does not name the NIE specifically. A passport is a document proving identity, so it fits what the law asks, although an operator's own policy for contracts or extras may ask for more. Ask before you queue, and take the passport either way.

Contracts and the bank account question

Monthly contracts are paid by direct debit, which raises the usual worry: do you need a Spanish bank account first? Not if you already have a euro account elsewhere in the EU. The Banco de España states that refusing payments or direct debits from an account because its IBAN is from another EU country is illegal under Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 260/2012.

If it happens, the Banco de España suggests telling the company that it must accept IBANs from any EU country, sending a formal complaint and, if that fails, going to the competent authority: for a consumer against a company, the consumer affairs authority of the region. This protection covers euro accounts in the EU; an account from outside the EU is a different case, and there a Spanish or EU account will be needed.

When a Spanish number starts to be worth it

Some things work without one. Spain's Cl@ve system for online public services, for example, accepts a national or a foreign mobile number at registration, according to the government's own page, although it requires an NIE or DNI. So paperwork is not always the reason to switch.

The reason is usually other people. A landlord, a colleague or a doctor's surgery ringing your foreign number is making an international call, not a local one. EU citizens can roam on their home plan, but it is designed for travel and an operator can apply fair-use limits to someone who is living abroad, as explained in EU roaming fair use explained; students have their own rules in phone plans for Erasmus students. Once you are calling and being called locally every week, a Spanish line pays for itself.

Keep both numbers in one phone

A phone that takes eSIMs can usually keep two lines active at once (on Android it depends on the model), so moving does not mean choosing. Put the Spanish line in the eSIM or SIM slot and keep the home number next to it for bank codes and family; two lines in one phone explains which line should carry data and which should call. WhatsApp stays on whichever number you set it up with, as covered in keeping your WhatsApp number.

A Spanish plan will not always travel with you as cheaply as it works at home. For weekend trips outside the EU, or for a country pack where your plan is weak, a travel eSIM added for a few days does the job, and Snoozim's Spain pack is there for the gap between landing and signing a contract.

Questions
Do I need an NIE to get a Spanish prepaid SIM?

The law asks for a document proving your identity and records your nationality; it does not name the NIE. A passport is a valid identity document, but ask the operator about its own requirements.

Can a Spanish operator refuse my bank account from another EU country?

No. The Banco de España says refusing an EU IBAN is illegal under Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 260/2012. This applies to euro accounts in the EU.

Should I get a Spanish number as soon as I arrive?

Not necessarily. A data eSIM covers the first weeks; switch when you have your documents and start making and receiving local calls regularly.

Can I keep my home number after moving to Spain?

Yes. Keep it as a second line in the same phone for bank codes and family, and WhatsApp can stay on it.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
