How to stop photo backups using your mobile data

iCloud Photos uploads every photo and video at full resolution, and Google Photos backs up as you shoot, so a week of holiday videos can quietly use a large part of a travel plan. On iPhone, Low Data Mode on the travel line pauses iCloud Photos; on Google Photos, one screen sets a daily limit and keeps videos for Wi-Fi. Nothing is lost while backups wait.

Why backups hit a travel plan so hard

Apple's guide says that with iCloud Photos on, the photos and videos you take are uploaded automatically and stored in their original format at full resolution. Google Photos works the same way once backup is on. At home on Wi-Fi you never notice. On a trip, every clip of the sea and every slow-motion fountain goes up over whatever connection the phone has.

Video is the heavy part, by far: a clip is a long run of frames plus sound, and the higher the camera's resolution and frame rate, the bigger the file. The aim is not to switch backup off, because a backed-up phone is the one you are glad of if it is lost, as the lost phone guide explains. The aim is to let photos go and make videos wait for Wi-Fi.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

iPhone: hold iCloud Photos back on the travel line

The simplest lever is Low Data Mode. Apple lists what it does for iCloud: it pauses updates and automatic backups and turns off iCloud Photos updates. On a dual SIM iPhone you can set it only on the travel line, in Settings, Cellular, then the travel number, so your home line is untouched. Photos stay on the phone and upload when you are back on Wi-Fi.

If you want a harder rule, go to Settings, Cellular, find Photos in the list of apps and switch it off; Apple says an app with cellular data off uses only Wi-Fi. Watch out for one newer option, Sync Immediately, which prioritises uploading new items for a day: Apple warns it may affect cellular usage. It pauses in Low Data Mode, but leave it off on the road anyway.

Check whether it is uploading or waiting

The Photos app shows the sync status at a glance. On recent iOS versions, open Photos, tap Collections and look at your account icon at the top: a partially filled blue circle means it is uploading, a grey outline means uploads are paused, and a yellow badge means syncing is paused, with the reason one tap away. Apple's troubleshooting page says a message mentioning Low Data Mode means syncing paused to reduce data use, which is exactly what you want.

From the same account screen you can also pause the upload for a day. Apple's advice for catching up is plain: connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi and let it sync overnight. That is the routine that fits a hotel.

iCloud Backup is a separate switch

iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup are different things, and the second one has its own cellular option. Apple says iCloud Backup normally runs over Wi-Fi when the phone is on, locked and charging. If your device and carrier support it, there is also Back Up Over Cellular, which lets the backup use mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable.

It sits in Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup. On a trip, leave it off: a full device backup over a data plan is the last thing you want, and one night on hotel Wi-Fi does the job. Apple also notes that Allow More Data on 5G enables automatic iCloud backups over the network, another reason not to use that mode on a travel line.

Google Photos: one screen does it all

  • Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
  • Go to Photos settings, then Backup, then Mobile data usage.
  • Set a daily limit for backup on mobile data.
  • Turn off Back up videos over data.
  • Decide on Backup while roaming: off stops backups when the phone sees itself as roaming.

These are Google's own steps. With videos off and a modest daily limit, photos keep backing up as you go and videos wait for Wi-Fi. Whether the phone treats a travel eSIM as roaming depends on the line, so rely on the video switch and the limit rather than the roaming switch alone.

Smaller files when you must back up on data

Google Photos also lets you choose the backup quality. Storage saver keeps photos and videos at a slightly reduced quality: photos over 16 MP are resized to 16 MP and videos above 1080p are brought down to 1080p. In some countries there is also Express, which Google says may compress photos to use less mobile data, resizing them to 3 MP and videos to 480p. Both count towards your Google storage.

On iPhone there is no smaller upload option for iCloud Photos; Optimize iPhone Storage saves space on the phone, not data on the way up. If backup on the road matters to you, the realistic approach is the one above: photos on data, videos on Wi-Fi. To see how much your backups would add, put the rest of your use into the data calculator and leave room for the evenings you cannot find Wi-Fi.

Questions
Will I lose photos if iCloud Photos is paused?

No. New photos stay on the iPhone and upload when syncing resumes, for example overnight on Wi-Fi and power.

Does Low Data Mode stop iCloud Photos?

Yes. Apple says Low Data Mode pauses iCloud updates and automatic backups and turns off iCloud Photos updates.

How do I stop Google Photos uploading videos on mobile data?

In Google Photos, go to Photos settings, Backup, Mobile data usage and turn off Back up videos over data.

Is the roaming switch in Google Photos enough on a travel eSIM?

Not on its own, because whether the phone sees a travel line as roaming varies. The video switch and the daily limit work either way.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.
