What the roaming icon on your phone means

On Android, a small R next to the signal bars means the phone is connected to a network outside your operator's own coverage, which is exactly what roaming is. iPhone shows no roaming icon at all; there, the thing to check is the Data Roaming setting. Either way, the indicator only says whose network you are on. Whether it costs you anything depends on the line and the country.

The R on Android

Samsung's guide to Galaxy status icons lists the R as roaming and describes it as being outside your normal service area. Google describes the matching setting on Pixel phones in the same terms: roaming lets the phone send data over other operators' networks when you leave the area covered by your own operator.

Two details are worth knowing. Samsung notes that indicator icons can look different depending on the operator and the model, so yours may not look exactly like the one in a guide. And on a phone with two lines there are two sets of bars, one per line, so look at which one carries the R before drawing conclusions. On a trip with a travel eSIM, the R is often on the eSIM's bars and not on your usual line, and that is fine.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

On iPhone there is no R, so look elsewhere

Apple's list of iPhone status icons covers signal bars, No Service, SOS, the network type such as LTE or 5G, and more, but there is no roaming symbol among them. The status bar will not tell you that you are roaming.

Two places will. Apple notes that opening Control Center shows the status icons together with each line's label and operator name, which tells you whose network each line is using right now. And the switch that decides whether a line may use data abroad is in Settings, Mobile Data, the line, Mobile Data Options, Data Roaming; on some versions the first menu is called Cellular or Mobile Service. Apple describes Data Roaming as permitting internet access over a mobile network in regions not covered by your operator's network.

The indicator is not a bill

Within the EU, roaming is usually not an extra charge for an EU line. Under the rules the EU calls roam like at home, using your phone in another EU country is charged at domestic rates, and the same applies in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Operators can apply a fair use policy to data, and the EU roaming calculator works out what yours has to give you.

Outside those countries the R means something else. The EU's Your Europe portal warns that roaming outside the EU and EEA can be expensive and recommends checking rates with your provider before travelling. The same portal points out that on ships and planes, services provided by satellite fall outside EU rules altogether. So the same letter can mean nothing in Lisbon and a lot in Marrakesh, on the same line.

With a travel eSIM, the R is expected

A travel eSIM usually connects to local networks as a visitor, so the R next to its bars is normal and is not a warning. In fact the line only works abroad if data roaming is switched on for it, because for that line every local network counts as someone else's. With a prepaid data eSIM that switch adds no cost: the data is paid in advance and there is nothing running in the background. That is how Snoozim eSIMs work, and why the first fix when one shows bars but no data is turning data roaming on for that line.

The line to keep an eye on is your usual one. If you do not want your home operator charging you, turn data roaming off on that line and leave the eSIM as the line for mobile data. The set-up for two lines is in the dual SIM guide.

Other status bar signs you might see abroad

  • No Service or Searching: the line is not connected to any mobile network. Apple's first step is airplane mode on for at least 15 seconds, then off.
  • SOS or SOS only: on iPhone, full service from your operator is not available, but emergency calls may be possible through other networks, in the countries where Apple offers this.
  • LTE, 4G or 5G: the type of network available, not whether you are roaming.
  • Airplane: airplane mode is on and the mobile lines are off.

If the eSIM shows bars and an R but still no data, the checks in order are in the no-service guide.

Questions
Does the R mean I am paying extra?

Not necessarily. It only means you are on another operator's network. Inside the EU an EU line is normally charged at domestic rates; outside it, check your plan.

Why does my iPhone not show a roaming icon?

Apple's status bar has no roaming symbol. Open Control Center to see which operator each line is using, and check Data Roaming in the line's settings.

Is the R normal on a travel eSIM?

Yes. A travel eSIM usually connects to local networks as a visitor, so it shows roaming, and it needs data roaming switched on to work.

Can I make the R disappear?

Only by connecting to your own operator's network or turning data roaming off. With a travel eSIM, turning it off stops the eSIM from working, so leave it on for that line.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
