When your travel eSIM runs out of data: what happens and what to check
When a data eSIM runs out, the internet on that line stops. Your usual number keeps receiving calls and texts, and wifi still works. The real risk is a dual SIM setting that lets the phone use data from your home line instead, which abroad can mean roaming charges, so check it before the plan reaches zero.
See data plansHow you notice
Usually it is quiet. Messages stay with one tick, maps stop loading new streets and web pages hang. The phone may still show signal bars on the eSIM line, because it is still registered on the local network even though the plan has no data left. That combination, bars but no internet, is the typical sign.
Before assuming the worst, rule out the other usual cause: the phone may have switched the data line, or data roaming may be off on the eSIM. Our guide on checking data usage on your travel eSIM shows where to look, and if the problem is no signal at all rather than no data, see what to do when the eSIM has no service.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works
- 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
- 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
The setting that can hand data to your home line
On an iPhone with two lines, Apple describes an option called Allow Cellular Data Switching: with it on, the iPhone can use data from both plans, depending on coverage and availability. Google Pixel phones have a similar option, automatic data switching, in the SIM settings.
At home that is convenient. Abroad, if your usual line has data roaming switched on, the phone could start using it when the eSIM stops giving data, and that use is billed by your operator under its roaming terms. The simple protection is to keep data roaming off on your home line for the whole trip; calls and texts keep arriving without it. The steps are in how to turn off roaming on your home line.
What still works with no data left
- Calls and texts on your usual number, at the price your operator applies in that country.
- Wifi, for everything that needs internet.
- Downloaded maps, saved tickets and boarding passes in your wallet.
- Offline translations and anything else you saved on the phone.
In other words, you are not cut off, just without mobile internet. That is usually enough to get to a café or back to the hotel and top up from there. If you are in the middle of a route, the downloaded map still shows where you are, so you can walk to the nearest place with wifi without guessing.
Top up before zero, not after
Topping up is easiest while you still have a little data, because you need a connection to pay. If you wait until the plan is empty, you will be looking for wifi first. With Snoozim, a top-up goes onto the eSIM already on your phone, so there is no second QR code and nothing to reinstall; keep the purchase confirmation email, because that is what you need to top up.
What you should not do is delete the eSIM to start again. A deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled, and any data left on it goes with it. We explain why in what happens if you delete an eSIM.
Set an alarm on Android
Android can warn you before the plan runs out. On a Google Pixel, open Settings, then Network and internet, open the eSIM line (under SIMs or Internet, depending on the Android version) and tap Data warning and limit. There you can set a warning at an amount of your choice, and also a limit at which mobile data switches off automatically. Google notes that some features stop working while mobile data is off. Other Android brands have a similar setting in their data usage menus.
Set the warning a little below the size of your plan, because the phone and the provider do not always count data in exactly the same way. On iPhone there is no equivalent warning in that menu, so the habit is to reset the statistics on arrival and check the figure every couple of days.
How much margin to leave
The amount that runs out fastest is the one you did not plan for: photo backups, app updates or a laptop on the hotspot for one afternoon. If your estimate is tight, either buy a little more from the start or turn off those background uses while you are on mobile data.
Our guide on how much data you need shows typical amounts by type of trip, and the data calculator works out your own case. Checking your usage halfway through the trip tells you much more than any estimate made at home.
Will my phone use my home line when the eSIM runs out?
It can, if data switching is on and your home line has data roaming enabled. Keep data roaming off on your home line to prevent it.
Do I need to reinstall the eSIM to add data?
Not with Snoozim. The top-up is added to the eSIM already installed on your phone.
Can I still receive calls when my data runs out?
Yes, on your usual number. A data eSIM running out does not affect your other line.
Why does my phone show signal but no internet?
The eSIM can stay connected to the network after the data is used up, so the bars remain but nothing loads.
