Using mobile data in Europe with a US phone

Your US plan may already work in Europe, whether included, through a daily pass or at pay-per-use rates, but the EU’s free roaming rules do not apply to it, so your carrier sets the terms. For more data or a lower price, most recent US phones can add a European data eSIM next to your US line, as long as the phone is unlocked.

Start with what your US plan already includes

The EU’s roam like at home rule protects plans from EU and EEA countries, not visitors’ plans, so in Europe your US carrier decides everything: which countries are included, how much data you get and what happens when it runs out. Apple’s advice to travellers is to check with your carrier before you go, because some plans include certain countries and others sell travel passes you can buy ahead of time.

Look for three things in your plan’s international section: whether each country on your route is listed by name, whether data is included or charged per day, and what happens once any included data is used up. Europe is a lot of countries, and a list that includes France may not include Switzerland or the United Kingdom.

Several countries on one trip? Same eSIM, same data, no swapping lines at the border.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Check whether your phone is unlocked

To use a European SIM or data eSIM, your phone cannot be locked to your US carrier. On iPhone, go to Settings › General › About and look next to Carrier Lock: if it says No SIM restrictions, the phone is unlocked. On Android the menus vary by brand and carrier, so the quickest check is to ask your carrier directly.

Unlocking conditions in the US differ from one carrier to another and can depend on things like whether the phone is paid off and how long it has been active, so ask before the trip, not from a hotel room in Rome. If the phone is locked and cannot be unlocked in time, you are limited to whatever your carrier offers abroad.

Most US phones are already eSIM-ready

iPhones sold in the US from the iPhone 14 onwards have no SIM tray: Apple’s US specifications list them as eSIM-only. Every iPhone from the XS and XR onwards supports eSIM, and supported models can keep two eSIMs active at once, one for your US number and one for data in Europe. Many recent Android phones support eSIM too; our compatible phones page shows how to check yours by looking for an EID in the settings.

Install it before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home: you scan a QR code, label the new line and leave it waiting. A data plan from Snoozim only starts counting when it first connects in Europe, so installing early does not cost you days.

Keeping your US number reachable

A European data eSIM gives you data only, with no new number. Your US line stays on the phone for calls and texts, including the verification codes your bank sends by SMS, while the eSIM carries the data. To make sure the US line never uses data abroad, set mobile data to the eSIM and switch data roaming off on the US line.

Apps that work over the internet, such as WhatsApp, keep your usual account and number while using the eSIM’s data. Ordinary calls and texts on your US line are priced by your carrier while you are abroad, so check those rates before you rely on them, and use internet calling where you can.

Things that work differently in Europe

  • The emergency number is 112, free of charge everywhere in the EU, from mobile phones and landlines.
  • A plan for one country stops at its border, and day trips by train, such as Paris to Brussels or Vienna to Bratislava, cross into another country’s networks.
  • Switzerland and the United Kingdom are outside the EU, and some plans that cover the EU leave them out.
  • Ferries and cruise ships run their own satellite-linked networks, which usually carry high charges; use flight mode at sea.

If your route crosses several countries, a regional plan that covers all of them saves you swapping eSIMs at every border. Snoozim’s Europe pack covers 33 countries, the United Kingdom and Switzerland included.

A short checklist before you fly

  • Check your US plan’s international terms for every country on your route.
  • Confirm the phone is unlocked: Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock on iPhone.
  • Look for an EID in the settings to confirm eSIM support.
  • Install the travel eSIM on Wi-Fi at home and label the line.
  • Download offline maps of the cities you will visit.
  • On landing, set mobile data to the travel line and turn data roaming on for it, not for the US line.

Turning on data roaming for the travel eSIM does not cost anything extra: the plan is already for Europe, and the switch only lets it connect to the networks there.

Questions
Does the EU’s free roaming apply to US phone plans?

No. It only covers plans from EU and EEA countries. Your US carrier sets the price of using your plan in Europe.

Can I keep my US number while using a European eSIM?

Yes. A data eSIM has no number, so your US line stays on the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your usual account.

How do I know if my iPhone is unlocked?

Go to Settings › General › About and look next to Carrier Lock. No SIM restrictions means it is unlocked.

My US iPhone has no SIM slot. Can I still use a European plan?

Yes, as an eSIM. US iPhones from the iPhone 14 onwards take every line as an eSIM, installed from a QR code.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
