When to buy a travel eSIM, and when to install it
Buy it as soon as you know where you are going, and install it at home on Wi-Fi a day or a few days before you leave. A data eSIM does not start when you pay or when you install it: it starts at the first connection in the destination, and with Snoozim you can buy it up to 180 days ahead.
See eSIM plansPaying, installing and starting are three separate moments
Most of the worry about timing comes from treating these as one event. Paying gets you a QR code by email. Installing is scanning that code so the phone downloads the eSIM profile and adds a second line. Starting is the first time that line connects to a mobile network in the country the plan covers, and only from that moment do the plan's days begin to count.
Because the clock is tied to that first connection, buying early costs you nothing in validity. You can pay months before the trip, as long as it is within the 180-day window, and the plan is exactly as long on landing day as it would have been if you had bought it the evening before. The only real deadline is the install, and that one has a reason.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works
- 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
- 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
The real deadline: installing while you still have Wi-Fi
Installing an eSIM means downloading it, so the phone needs a connection at that moment. Apple says it plainly in its guide to travel eSIMs: the iPhone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network or a hotspot to set one up. Android phones also download the profile over the internet when you scan the code.
That is why the practical answer is the evening before you fly at the latest, at home, on your own Wi-Fi, with the QR open on a second screen. Leave it for the airport and you depend on terminal Wi-Fi, a queue behind you and a phone at low battery. The menus for iPhone, Samsung and Pixel are in the step-by-step install guide, so they are not repeated here.
Settle these before you pay
- The phone takes eSIMs and is not locked to an operator. Check your exact model on the compatibility page.
- The right coverage. A single-country pack works only in that country; the Europe pack works in 33 countries with nothing to change at the borders.
- The amount of data. A rough estimate from the data calculator is enough to choose.
- An email address you can open on the trip, because the QR and the invoice arrive there.
If any of these is uncertain, it is the reason to buy early rather than late: an operator lock, for example, can take days to remove, and that is the kind of problem you want to discover at home.
Between installing and landing, leave the new line alone
Once the eSIM is installed, there is nothing to do with it until you arrive. The step that lets it connect abroad is switching on data roaming for that line, which you can leave for the moment you land. Apple describes Data Roaming as the setting that permits internet access over networks outside your carrier's own, which for a travel eSIM means the local networks of your destination.
Two things to avoid in the meantime. Do not delete the line to tidy up your settings: once installed, the eSIM stays on that phone and the same QR will not install it again. And do not swap phones before the trip, because the eSIM goes with the phone it was installed on, not with you. The night-before routine is covered in the pre-flight checklist.
Bought it late? What still works
Apple notes that a travel plan can be bought before you travel or after you arrive, and a late purchase is still workable. If you buy at the gate, install there on the airport Wi-Fi before boarding. If you buy after landing, you need Wi-Fi first, from the terminal, a café or the hotel, to download the profile, and you go without mobile data until then.
A connection through another country changes nothing for a single-country pack: it will not connect in the transit country, so it does not start there either. What happens on a long stopover is explained in the layover guide.
The next trip: top up instead of buying again
If the eSIM is still on your phone and your next trip falls within its coverage, you do not need a new QR. Snoozim eSIMs are topped up without reinstalling: the new data goes onto the profile that is already there. This is one more reason not to delete the line when you get home, even if you think you are finished with it.
The timing logic for a top-up is the same as for the first purchase: do it from home, on Wi-Fi, before the trip, so the data is already there when you land. If the next destination falls outside what the eSIM covers, for example a country pack and a trip to a different country, that is a new purchase with its own QR, and the same rule applies to it: buy when the trip is fixed, install the night before at the latest.
How far in advance can I buy the eSIM?
Up to 180 days before the trip. The plan does not start counting until the first connection in the destination, so buying early does not shorten it.
If I install it a week before, do I lose a week?
No. Installing only adds the line to the phone. The days start at the first connection to a network in the country the plan covers.
Do I need internet to install it?
Yes. The phone downloads the profile when you scan the QR, and Apple states that an iPhone must be on Wi-Fi or a hotspot to set up an eSIM. That is why home is the best place to do it.
Can I buy it today for a trip next year?
Only if the trip is within 180 days. For anything later, wait until you are inside that window.
