How much data does a WhatsApp call use?

WhatsApp does not publish an official per-minute figure, so any exact number you read elsewhere is someone’s own measurement. The good news is that WhatsApp counts your call data itself, under Settings > Storage and data > Network usage. Its own help also gives two ways to use less: a setting for calls and, during 1:1 video calls on mobile data, a Data Saver button.

Where WhatsApp shows the data your calls used

Open WhatsApp’s Settings (on Android, from the three-dot menu), go to Storage and data and tap Network usage. The screen splits your usage by type, and calls have their own line, with what was sent and what was received.

To turn that into a figure you can plan with, run a small test at home. Note the call numbers, make a five-minute voice call on mobile data, then a five-minute video call, and look again. Divide by five and you have your own per-minute cost, on your phone and your network, which is more useful than any average.

Your phone keeps a separate count of mobile data per app. On iPhone it is in Settings > Cellular; on Android, in the app data usage screen. That one tells you what WhatsApp took from your mobile plan specifically.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The setting WhatsApp itself recommends

In WhatsApp’s help pages, the advice to save data on calls is twofold: make and answer calls on Wi-Fi when you can, and turn on Use less data for calls, found in Settings > Storage and data. It applies to your calls in general, not to one call at a time.

WhatsApp does not say how much the setting saves, so the honest way to judge it is the same test as above: one call with it off, one with it on, and compare the Network usage figures. If the call still sounds fine to you, leave it on for the trip. If you are on hotel Wi-Fi most evenings, the bigger saving is simply waiting for the Wi-Fi to make the long calls home.

Video calls: the Data Saver button during the call

For 1:1 video calls on mobile data, WhatsApp has a Data Saver you switch on during the call itself, from the call’s menu. When it is on, the video you receive drops to a lower quality so the call uses less data, while the video the other person sees from you stays at full quality. The drop happens within a few seconds.

It has clear limits. It only applies to 1:1 video calls on cellular data, not on Wi-Fi, not to group calls and not to voice calls. It switches itself off when the call ends, so you turn it on again for each call where you want it. WhatsApp may also show a Use less mobile data prompt during a cellular video call, which leads to the same option.

Calling on WhatsApp with a data-only eSIM

A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, no calls and no SMS of its own, but WhatsApp calls do not need any of that: they go over the internet connection. Your WhatsApp account stays tied to your usual number, so people call you on it as always while the data comes from the travel line. Why the number stays is explained in detail in a separate guide.

The one thing to get right is which line carries data. With two lines on the phone, mobile data has to be set to the travel eSIM, or the calls will go through your home plan. The dual SIM setup guide shows where that setting is on iPhone and Android.

The other WhatsApp setting that matters on a trip

Calls are rarely the biggest WhatsApp cost on holiday; group chats full of videos are. Under Settings > Storage and data, the Media auto-download section lets you choose what downloads automatically when you are on mobile data. Limiting it to photos, or to nothing, means videos only download when you tap them.

WhatsApp’s own help warns that roaming data is often expensive and that leaving auto-download on while roaming can raise the bill. With a prepaid travel eSIM there is no surprise bill, but the same downloads eat into the data you bought. Before you go, it is worth running the numbers in the data calculator with your real habits.

Questions
Do WhatsApp calls use my call minutes?

No. WhatsApp calls go over the internet connection, so they use data from whichever connection the phone is on, Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Can I make WhatsApp calls with a data-only eSIM?

Yes. The eSIM provides the internet connection and WhatsApp keeps working with your usual number.

Does Data Saver work on group video calls?

No. WhatsApp says it only applies to 1:1 video calls on cellular data, not to group calls, voice calls or calls on Wi-Fi.

Where do I see how much data my WhatsApp calls used?

In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Storage and data > Network usage. Calls appear as their own line.
