APN settings: what they are and when you actually need to touch them
The APN, or access point name, is the setting that tells your phone which gateway to use for mobile data. On most phones it fills itself in from the SIM or eSIM and you never see it. You only need to change it when your provider gives you a specific APN to enter, usually because a line shows signal but no data and the usual checks have not fixed it.

Apple describes the APN as the setting that defines the network path for all mobile data connections. Google puts it from the other side: it helps the operator find the right IP address and connect your phone securely. Either way, it only matters for data. Calls and text messages do not use it.
That explains the typical symptom of a wrong or missing APN. The phone is registered on a network, so you see bars and maybe an LTE or 5G icon, but nothing loads. The radio part works; the data session never opens. Apple also notes that some operators require you to enter APN settings yourself to set up service, which is why a few providers include an APN in their installation instructions and most do not.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works
- 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
- 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
Rule out the usual suspects before opening the APN menu
- Data roaming is on for the travel line. Abroad, a travel eSIM will not move any data without it.
- The travel line is the one selected for mobile data, not your usual SIM.
- Airplane mode has been on for at least 15 seconds and off again, or the phone has been restarted, so it searches for networks from scratch.
These three solve far more no-data cases than the APN ever does. The order that works, with the exact menus for each phone, is in the guide to an eSIM with no internet. Open the APN screen only when all three are right and the line still shows bars without data.
Where the APN is on an iPhone
- Settings › Mobile Data › Mobile Data Network.
- Or Settings › Mobile Data › Mobile Data Options › Mobile Data Network.
- On some versions and regions the first menu is called Cellular, and the screen Cellular Data Network.
If neither screen exists on your iPhone, the operator of that line does not allow the APN to be viewed or edited, and Apple's advice is to contact them. Changes save as you type. A Reset Settings button on the same screen puts back the operator's defaults.
One detail catches people out on longer trips: Apple says an iOS update resets any APN change unless it came from a configuration profile. If you typed an APN in and then updated the phone, check that screen again.
Where the APN is on Android
- Google Pixel: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › tap the line › Access Point Names.
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings › Connections › Mobile networks › Access Point Names.
- Other brands: type APN into the search box at the top of Settings.
With two lines in the phone, each one has its own list, so make sure you have opened the travel line and not your usual SIM. To add an entry, use the add button on the APN screen, fill in a name for your own reference and the APN field exactly as your provider gives it, save, and then select the new entry so it is the one in use. Samsung's screen has a Reset to default option in the three-dot menu if you want to undo everything.
Typing it in without breaking anything
Copy the APN character for character, including capitals and dots, and leave every other field as it is unless the provider tells you to fill it. Apple warns that incorrect APN settings can cost you mobile data and lead to extra charges, and says not to edit the APN unless your carrier or device administrator tells you to. That rules out values copied from forums or from another company's help page: each provider uses its own.
Touch only the travel line. The APN on your usual SIM is what gives you data at home, and changing it buys you nothing abroad. If a Snoozim eSIM shows bars and no data after the checks above, write to us with your phone model before entering anything by hand, so we can tell you whether an APN is needed at all.
Does a travel eSIM need an APN?
Usually not: the profile normally sets up its own data connection. Enter one only if your provider's instructions include an APN, or they ask you to after checking your line.
Can a wrong APN cost money?
Apple says incorrect APN settings can cause loss of mobile data and extra charges. On a prepaid travel line the usual result is simply no data, but on your home line it is not worth the risk.
Why can't I find the APN screen on my iPhone?
Apple only shows it when the operator of that line allows the APN to be viewed or edited. If it is missing, the operator manages it and is the one to ask.
Does changing the APN affect my number or WhatsApp?
No. The APN only affects how that line reaches mobile data. Your number stays on your usual SIM and WhatsApp keeps the account it already had.
