Can a smartwatch use a travel eSIM?
Not directly. The cellular line of an Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch is set up through the operator of your phone, so a data-only travel eSIM goes on the phone instead. The watch then gets notifications, messages and maps through the paired phone, which is what most people want on a trip anyway.

A cellular watch does have an eSIM inside, but it is not an open slot for any plan. Apple says your iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier, that pre-paid accounts and some older accounts are not supported, and that you must be within your carrier's network when you set up cellular on the watch. The setup itself runs from the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, under My Watch, Cellular, Set Up Cellular, and it hands you over to your operator.
Android watches follow the same logic. Google says that for full talk, text and data on a Pixel Watch, the watch and the phone must use the same carrier network, and Samsung says a shared number on a Galaxy Watch needs the phone and the watch on the same carrier.
A travel eSIM that arrives as a QR code by email is a separate, prepaid data plan from a different provider. It belongs on the phone.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How the watch stays online through the phone
This is the part that makes the question less important than it sounds. Apple explains that an Apple Watch switches automatically to the most power-efficient connection available: the iPhone when it is nearby, a Wi-Fi network, or cellular. With the phone in your pocket, the watch talks to it over a short-range link and uses whatever connection the phone has.
So if the travel eSIM is the phone's data line, the watch is effectively running on it. Notifications arrive, WhatsApp messages show up on the wrist, and turn-by-turn directions from the phone's map appear on the watch, all paid for out of the phone's plan. Samsung makes the same point from the other side: a Galaxy Watch with LTE and no active cellular plan still works as a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi watch.
What you lose is independence. Leave the phone at the hotel and the watch is limited to Wi-Fi, if it has a known network nearby.
Roaming with the watch's own line: Apple Watch
If your watch already has a cellular plan at home, it can sometimes roam with it. Apple says that with watchOS 9.1 or later, international roaming is available on cellular models of Apple Watch Series 5 and later, Apple Watch SE and later, and Apple Watch Ultra. Your carrier has to support VoLTE and roaming, and you contact your iPhone carrier to add the watch to your iPhone's roaming plan. Coverage abroad is whatever that carrier offers.
The switch is on the watch itself: open Settings, tap Cellular, then turn on Data Roaming. Watches set up with Apple Watch For Your Kids do not support international roaming.
There is one hardware limit too. Apple sells cellular watches in regional models for the Americas, mainland China and Europe/Asia Pacific, and says there is no worldwide model that supports every band in use. A watch bought on one continent may simply not find the networks of another.
Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch
Samsung says the LTE Galaxy Watch supports roaming, but tells you to check with your carrier whether your plan includes international roaming before you take the watch abroad. Some operators do not enable it at all for the watch, in which case its line simply has no service outside the home country and the watch falls back to the phone.
Google's help for the Pixel Watch 2 is more specific. It supports roaming within each region, the EU, UK and APAC on one side and North America on the other, but not between those regions. As with Apple, the operator must support VoLTE and roaming for the watch, data roaming has to be switched on in the watch's mobile settings, and coverage depends on the operator.
For newer models, the operator's own page is the place to check, since the conditions are set per plan and per country.
Three questions for your operator before you go
- Does my watch plan roam at all, and in which countries?
- Is watch roaming charged separately from my phone's roaming?
- If I switch off data on my home line, does the watch line keep working?
If the answers are no or unclear, the simplest plan is to rely on the phone. Put the travel eSIM on the phone, set it as the data line and keep the watch paired. You lose nothing you would use with the phone in your pocket, and nothing roams behind your back.
If you travel with a phone and a tablet as well, remember that a travel eSIM stays on the device where it was installed. Decide which device gets it before you scan the code. The two-line setup guide explains which line should carry data on the phone.
Can I install a travel eSIM on my Apple Watch?
No. Apple requires the watch to use the same carrier as the iPhone and does not support pre-paid accounts for the watch, so a travel data eSIM goes on the iPhone.
Will my watch still get notifications abroad?
Yes, as long as it is paired with your phone and the phone has data. The watch uses the phone's connection when it is nearby.
Does my Apple Watch roam with its own cellular plan?
It can on Series 5 and later, SE and Ultra with watchOS 9.1 or later, if your carrier adds the watch to your roaming plan and supports VoLTE and roaming. You also turn on Data Roaming in the watch's Cellular settings.
Does a GPS-only watch work abroad?
Yes. It never had its own mobile connection, so it works exactly as at home through the paired phone.
