How much data does TikTok use?
TikTok does not publish how much data it uses, and since the feed is one full-screen video after another, it can be a lot. The app's own Data Saver lowers video quality on mobile data, and it matters more than any phone setting, because the phone's savers leave the app on screen alone. Ten minutes of scrolling with the counter reset gives you your real figure.
See the data plansWhy the phone's data saver does not help much here
Low Data Mode on iPhone and Data Saver on Android are built around one idea: hold back what apps do in the background, let the app you are using carry on. Apple says Low Data Mode stops apps using network data when you are not actively using them; Google says apps you are actively using can still use mobile data with Data Saver on.
TikTok spends its data in the foreground, while you watch and swipe, so those modes leave most of it untouched. Apple adds that Low Data Mode reduces the quality of streaming content, but also that different apps reduce data in different ways, so what TikTok does with that signal is up to TikTok. The setting that reliably works on the feed is the one inside the app.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
TikTok's own Data Saver
TikTok has a Data Saver switch in its settings. Open your profile, the menu at the top right, then Settings and privacy, and look in the cache and cellular data section; the exact wording moves between app versions. With Data Saver on, the app uses less data when you are not connected to Wi-Fi; the trade-off is that videos may show at a lower resolution and take a little longer to load.
On Wi-Fi it makes no difference, so there is no reason to switch it off at the hotel. On a phone screen the lower resolution is usually easy to live with, and the saving shows up straight away in the counter, which is how you should judge it.
Measure ten minutes of scrolling
- Reset the counter: on iPhone, Settings, Cellular (or Mobile Data), Reset Statistics at the bottom; on Android, open the app data usage screen and note TikTok's current figure.
- Switch off Wi-Fi and scroll the For You feed for ten minutes as you normally would.
- Read TikTok's line and multiply by six for an hour.
- Turn on Data Saver and repeat.
The two numbers tell you what an hour costs on your phone and what the setting is worth. Then think about how much you really scroll on holiday: twenty minutes at breakfast and twenty on the metro is already an hour and a half over a day with a few gaps filled in.
When TikTok should be Wi-Fi only
If the test shows numbers your plan cannot absorb, the clean solution is to stop TikTok using mobile data at all and keep it for the hotel. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, and switch TikTok off in the list of apps; Apple says an app with cellular data off uses only Wi-Fi. On a Samsung Galaxy, Data usage has an option to set the networks each app may use, where you can choose Wi-Fi only.
It sounds drastic, but it works well for people who use TikTok to pass time rather than to find things. Maps, messages and the apps you need on the street keep their data, and the feed waits for the evening. The iPhone guide and the Android guide cover the other per-app switches.
Posting from the trip
Uploading is the part people forget. Every video you post is sent in full from your phone, and a clip shot at the camera's highest settings is a bigger file to begin with. Editing in the app happens on the phone, but the finished video still has to go up, so film during the day and post the longer clips on Wi-Fi.
Live streams are the extreme case: video going out continuously for as long as you stay live. If you plan to go live from a trip, size your data for it, and test a few minutes at home first to see what it costs on your phone.
Putting it into a data plan
TikTok behaves like video, not like social media with photos, so in the data calculator it belongs in the video line rather than in everyday use. The calculator adds about 250 MB a day for occasional video and about 900 MB a day for a couple of hours; those are the site's estimates, and your ten-minute test is the better guide.
If the numbers come out larger than planned, a travel eSIM can be topped up without reinstalling, and a data-only plan keeps WhatsApp on your usual number while the feed runs on the travel line. Still, the cheapest TikTok on a trip is the one that waits for Wi-Fi.
How much data does TikTok use per hour?
TikTok does not publish a figure. Scroll for ten minutes on mobile data with the counter reset and multiply by six to get the figure for your phone.
Does TikTok's Data Saver affect Wi-Fi?
No. Data Saver only reduces data use when you are not connected to Wi-Fi.
Does Low Data Mode stop TikTok using data?
Not while you are watching. Low Data Mode mainly limits apps you are not actively using, so the in-app Data Saver or a Wi-Fi-only rule does more.
How do I stop TikTok using mobile data completely?
On iPhone, switch TikTok off under Settings, Cellular. On a Samsung, set it to Wi-Fi only in the Data usage settings for app networks.
Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.
