USB tethering or Wi-Fi hotspot: how to connect a laptop to your phone abroad

For one laptop at a desk, a USB cable is usually the better choice: the phone charges while it shares, nothing is broadcast for others to find, and there is no password to type. A Wi-Fi hotspot wins when several devices need the connection or the laptop cannot take the cable. Android phones cannot tether to a Mac by USB, so that combination has to use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Three ways to share the same data

iPhones and Android phones can share their mobile data in three ways: a Wi-Fi hotspot that other devices join like any wireless network, a USB cable to a computer, and Bluetooth. All three share the same connection and draw from the same plan; what changes is how the laptop reaches the phone.

Whichever you pick, the phone shares the line that is set for mobile data. If you are travelling with a data eSIM, make sure that is the line in charge before you connect anything, or you will be sharing your home plan at its roaming price. Apple also notes that Personal Hotspot needs a carrier that supports it, and Google warns that some carriers limit or charge extra for tethering, so check your plan's conditions too. Snoozim's eSIMs allow it.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Why the cable suits a working day

A working day on the phone's connection is long, and the hotspot is one of the most demanding things a phone does. Google's advice for tethering is to keep the devices plugged in and to switch tethering off when you are done. With USB, the same cable that carries the data usually keeps the phone charging from the laptop, which solves the battery problem at once.

The cable is also private by design. There is no network name for the next table in the café to see, and no password to share or leak. And because it is a direct link, there is nothing to choose from a list of nearby networks or rejoin after the laptop wakes from sleep.

The cost is mobility: the phone is tethered to the laptop, literally, and needs a cable that fits both ends. Carry one in the laptop bag permanently.

Setting up USB on iPhone and Android

On an iPhone, open Settings, then Personal Hotspot, turn on Allow Others to Join and connect the cable. If the computer asks whether to allow the accessory, accept, and tap Trust on the iPhone if it asks. Apple says a Windows PC needs the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows installed for this to work; a Mac needs nothing extra.

On Android, connect the cable first, then swipe down from the top of the screen, touch and hold Hotspot and turn on USB tethering. Google notes that some of these steps only exist from Android 14, and menu names vary between manufacturers, but the switch is always under hotspot and tethering. Google is also clear that Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB, so a Mac with an Android phone has to use the Wi-Fi hotspot or Bluetooth.

The iPhone detail that quietly spends your data

Apple's own instructions contain a warning that matters on a metered plan. When an iPhone is connected by USB, Personal Hotspot stays active, and the computer might connect to it whenever you plug the iPhone in, even if you only meant to charge it. A laptop that rejoins without asking will start its updates and cloud sync straight away.

So once the working session ends, go back to Settings, then Personal Hotspot, and turn off Allow Others to Join. Our laptop hotspot guide covers the other half of the problem: what to switch off on the laptop itself, from automatic updates and backups to the metered connection setting on Windows and low data mode on a Mac.

When the Wi-Fi hotspot is the right call

Wi-Fi is the answer when more than one device needs the connection, such as a laptop and a tablet, or two colleagues sharing one phone; when the laptop has no port that fits your cable; or when the phone needs to sit by a window for a better signal while you work at the back of the room.

Set a proper password: Apple asks for at least eight characters, and a longer one is better in a busy coworking space. Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account or Family Sharing group can use Instant Hotspot and connect without typing it at all. If an older laptop cannot see the iPhone's network, Apple suggests turning on Maximize Compatibility. On Android, look for the option that switches the hotspot off when no devices are connected, which Google recommends where the phone has it.

Bluetooth tethering is there on both systems too, and is mostly worth it when neither Wi-Fi nor a cable is an option.

Sizing the plan for days of remote work

None of these methods changes how much data the laptop uses; only what the laptop does changes that. Video calls, cloud folders and a browser full of tabs add up fast, and a working week on mobile data needs far more than a week of using the phone alone.

The data calculator asks how you work and suggests a pack size. If you run short partway through, a travel eSIM can be topped up without reinstalling it, so you can start with a reasonable size rather than the largest. For work trips that also need an invoice for expenses, every Snoozim purchase includes one with VAT, as the business travel guide explains.

Questions
Is USB tethering better than a Wi-Fi hotspot?

For one laptop at a desk, usually yes: the phone charges over the cable and nothing is broadcast for others to join. For several devices, the Wi-Fi hotspot is more practical.

Can I tether an Android phone to a Mac by USB?

No. Google says Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB; use the Wi-Fi hotspot or Bluetooth instead.

Why does my laptop use data when I just plug in my iPhone to charge?

Apple explains that Personal Hotspot stays active while the iPhone is connected by USB, so the computer may join it. Turn off Allow Others to Join when you finish working.

Does USB tethering use less data than Wi-Fi?

No. The data used depends on what the laptop does, not on how it connects to the phone.
