Does my mid-range Android phone really support eSIM?
Maybe, and the model name will not tell you. Makers often sell the same mid-range phone with eSIM in some regions and without it in others; Samsung, for example, marks several Galaxy A models as eSIM only in certain regions. The reliable test is on the phone itself: an EID in the settings and an Add eSIM option in the SIM menu.
Check your model on the tableWhy the cheaper models are the uncertain ones
With flagship phones, eSIM is now close to standard. Further down the range it depends on where the unit was made to be sold. Samsung's own eSIM page says availability depends on your region, carrier and device model, and lists Galaxy A models such as the A56, A36, A55, A35 and A54 with the note region-specific.
In practice, a review written in one country can confirm eSIM on a phone that, sold elsewhere under the same name, lacks it. Spec sites and shop listings often describe the model family, not the version you hold. Google's Pixel a-series is more uniform: our compatibility table lists eSIM on every Pixel a model from the 3a onwards, with the maker's notes.
For any other brand, assume nothing until the phone itself confirms it.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works
- 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
- 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
The two checks that read your actual phone
- Look for the EID. On a Galaxy it is under Settings, About phone, Status; on a Pixel under About phone, SIM status. On other brands, type EID into the search box at the top of Settings.
- Look for the option to add an eSIM. On a Galaxy, open Settings, Connections, SIM manager and look for Add eSIM or Add mobile plan.
If both are there, the phone has an eSIM chip and the software to use it. If the EID is missing, there is no chip, and no update will add one. These checks take less than a minute, and our guide on checking eSIM support has the details for iPhone as well.
One trap: on some dual SIM phones the status page is split per slot, and the EID may sit under the second one. Look at both before deciding.
Read the model number, not the name on the box
If you are checking before you buy, or the phone is not in your hands, the exact model number is what to compare. Samsung says the model number is shown in Settings, About phone, and on older devices under Status. That code is what the maker uses to tell regional versions apart, so two phones called Galaxy A35 can carry different codes and different hardware.
Compare that code with the maker's own support page for your country rather than a general spec site. Samsung adds a warning worth taking literally: depending on the country a unit was made for, it may not support eSIM even if the model appears on the list.
This matters most for second-hand phones and imports. A good price on a phone made for another market may come with no eSIM chip at all.
The EID is there but the eSIM will not install
An EID proves the chip exists. It does not prove the phone will accept a plan from any provider. The usual reason for a refusal is a carrier lock: a phone bought through an operator can be tied to that operator's lines, and it will reject a travel eSIM until it is unlocked. Our guide on checking if your phone is unlocked covers the Android checks.
Work phones are the other case. A company phone managed by IT can have eSIM changes blocked by policy, whatever the hardware allows.
Check both before buying a travel eSIM. A Snoozim eSIM stays on the phone where it is installed, so the moment to be sure is before you scan the QR code.
If yours turns out not to have one
Check the SIM tray first. If it takes two physical cards, you can still travel with two lines: your own card in one slot for calls and SMS, a local physical SIM in the other for data.
If the phone has only one slot and no eSIM, any local card replaces your own while it is in, and your number goes with it. The physical SIM or eSIM guide weighs up that trade-off.
And if you share a trip with someone whose phone does take an eSIM, their hotspot can cover maps and messages for both of you. It is worth knowing which phone in the group has the chip before anyone buys a plan.
Does the Galaxy A35 or A54 support eSIM?
Samsung lists them with eSIM only in some regions. Check your own unit for an EID under Settings, About phone, Status.
Can an update add eSIM to my phone?
No. eSIM needs a chip in the phone; software cannot add it if the hardware version you have was built without one.
The spec sheet says eSIM but I cannot find it. Why?
Spec sheets often describe the model family. Your regional version may lack the chip, or the phone may be locked to an operator.
Do Pixel a-series phones have eSIM?
Google lists eSIM on every Pixel a model from the 3a onwards. On a Pixel 3a bought in Japan, only one SIM works at a time.
