What happens if you delete an eSIM?

The line disappears from the phone and does not come back by itself. Apple says that after erasing an eSIM you need to get a new one from the provider. With a prepaid travel eSIM such as Snoozim's the loss is more direct: it cannot be reinstalled and any data left on it is gone.

Delete and switch off are not the same button

Switching a line off leaves the eSIM installed. It stops connecting, but the profile stays on the phone and comes back the moment you switch it on. Deleting removes the profile itself: the credentials the phone used to join that network are wiped.

Apple lists only a few good reasons to erase one: you have moved the plan or number to another device, or you are selling, trading in or giving away the phone. It also warns not to erase an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless your carrier tells you to. That last point is the one that catches travellers, because deleting and reinstalling feels like the obvious fix when the internet does not work on arrival.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

What it means for a travel eSIM

With a line from your home operator, a deleted eSIM is an inconvenience: you ask for a new one, scan another code and carry on. Apple also points out that erasing does not cancel the plan, and that the carrier may keep charging until you ask it to end the service.

With a prepaid travel eSIM the outcome can be final. A Snoozim eSIM, for example, cannot be reinstalled from the same QR code once it has been installed, so deleting it means the pack is lost along with whatever data was left. The same QR scanned again will not bring it back. The practical rule is simple: if the line still appears in your settings, the installation worked, and the problem is a setting.

Where the delete buttons are, so you know which to leave alone

  • iPhone: Settings, Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions), then Delete eSIM with one plan, or the plan and Delete Plan with several.
  • iPad: the same, under Settings, Cellular Data.
  • Google Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, Mobile network, the eSIM, then Erase eSIM.

On a Pixel there is also a safety net worth turning on before a trip. Google describes a Confirm SIM deletion option under Settings, Security, Advanced, which asks for your password before an eSIM can be erased. It stops an accidental tap, or a helpful friend, from wiping the travel line.

When the eSIM misbehaves, try this first

  • Check that Data Roaming is on for the travel line. Without it, a travel eSIM will not connect abroad.
  • Check that the travel line is the one selected for mobile data.
  • Turn flight mode on and off, or restart the phone, so it searches for networks again.
  • If you need the line out of the way, switch it off rather than deleting it: Use this SIM on a Pixel, the line's on and off switch on an iPhone.

Those four steps solve almost every no-internet case on arrival. The no-service guide goes through them in the order that works.

Resets, new phones and selling the old one

A full reset is another way to lose an eSIM without meaning to. Apple says that when you erase all content and settings on an iPhone, you can choose whether to erase the eSIM or keep it. If you reset a phone in the middle of a trip, choose to keep it.

Changing phones is the other trap. An installed travel eSIM stays on the phone where it was installed, so if you plan to upgrade before a trip, install the eSIM on the new phone, not the old one. When you do sell or give away a phone, that is the moment to delete its eSIMs, exactly as Apple recommends.

Questions
Can I reinstall a deleted eSIM with the same QR code?

Not with a Snoozim eSIM: once installed, the QR code does not work again. For a line from your home operator, Apple says to contact the operator for a new eSIM.

Does deleting an eSIM cancel my phone contract?

No. Apple says erasing the eSIM does not cancel the plan, and the carrier may keep charging until you ask it to end the service.

Will I lose WhatsApp if I delete my travel eSIM?

No. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, which stays on your usual line. You only lose the data the travel eSIM was providing.

Does a factory reset delete the eSIM?

On iPhone it asks you. Apple says you can choose to erase the eSIM or keep it when you erase all content and settings.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
