What unlimited data really means on a travel plan

On a travel plan, unlimited rarely means without any limit. It usually comes with a fair use policy, and once you pass a certain amount of use the speed can be reduced. Before paying, look for three things in the terms: the threshold, what happens when you cross it, and whether you can share the data with another device.

Calculate how much data you need

A word from the advert, not from the contract

Unlimited is the word on the product page. What you actually get is written in the terms, usually under a heading such as fair use or traffic management. That is where a plan says how much you can use at full speed, over what period, and what happens afterwards.

The period matters as much as the amount. Some plans count use per day and restore full speed the next day; others count over the whole plan. A threshold that sounds generous for a trip can feel small if it resets daily and you spent the morning uploading videos, and the opposite is also true. Read the clause once, slowly, before you compare prices.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How one advertising regulator reads it

The UK's advertising rules give a useful benchmark. Guidance from CAP, which writes the UK advertising codes enforced by the ASA, says an unlimited claim is likely to be acceptable if a legitimate user pays no extra charge and does not have the service suspended for going over a fair use or traffic management threshold.

The same guidance says any speed or usage restriction has to be moderate and clearly explained in the ad itself. In the cases it cites, halving the speed of heavy users was not considered moderate, and cutting off the data allowance after 4GB of tethering was judged an immoderate restriction. Those rules apply to UK ads, but they are a good test for any plan: if the limit would surprise a normal user, the word unlimited is doing too much work.

The small print worth finding

  • The threshold: how much you can use at full speed, and whether it counts per day or for the whole plan.
  • What happens after it: lower speed, an extra charge, or the data stopping altogether.
  • Hotspot: whether you can share the data with a laptop or another phone, and whether that has its own limit.
  • Coverage: whether it is unlimited in every country of the plan or only in some.
  • Length: how many days the plan lasts, which is often the real limit.

If a plan does not answer these questions anywhere, treat that as the answer.

What a reduced speed feels like

It depends on how far the speed is lowered, which the terms should state. What you notice first are the things that move the most data: video, video calls, uploading photos and large downloads. Text messages and emails usually keep going, more slowly, while video calls tend to suffer first.

Maps are a special case. Navigation with a downloaded area keeps working because the map is already on the phone, so it is worth preparing it before you travel. Our guide on how to use Google Maps offline shows how. If you share data with a laptop, expect the reduced speed to hit much harder, because a computer downloads updates and syncs files in the background.

Your unlimited plan at home has another limit abroad

Unlimited home plans have their own catch when you travel. Under the EU roaming rules, your operator can apply a fair use limit to unlimited and very cheap per-GB plans when you use them in another EU country, with a legal minimum it has to respect. So an unlimited plan in Spain is not necessarily unlimited in Lisbon or Rome.

We explain how that minimum is calculated in the EU roaming fair use policy explained, and you can work out yours with the roaming fair use calculator. Outside the EU, the limits are whatever your operator sets.

Do you need unlimited at all

For most trips, the honest answer is no. Maps, messages, ride apps and some social media fit comfortably in a fixed amount of data, and the plan only needs to be bigger if you stream video every day or work from a laptop. Our data calculator gives you an estimate for your trip in a minute.

A fixed plan that you can top up is a reasonable alternative to unlimited: you know exactly what you have and you add more if the trip asks for it. Snoozim's plans are topped up without reinstalling the eSIM, so running short in the middle of a trip is not a problem.

Questions
Is unlimited data on a travel eSIM really unlimited?

Usually not in the strict sense. Most plans have a fair use threshold, and above it the speed is reduced or other limits apply, as stated in the terms.

Does unlimited data include hotspot?

Not always. Some plans restrict or limit tethering separately, so check the hotspot clause before you rely on it for a laptop.

Does a throttled connection still work for WhatsApp?

Text messages usually keep working at a reduced speed. Video calls are the first thing to suffer.

Is my unlimited home plan unlimited in other EU countries?

Not necessarily. EU rules let operators apply a fair use limit to unlimited plans abroad, with a legal minimum.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
