From India to Europe: the phone, payment and paperwork to sort out at home

Many recent phones sold in India can keep the Indian SIM and add a European data eSIM: Apple's Indian iPhone 17 takes a nano-SIM and an eSIM. Keep the Indian line switched on, because UPI apps and bank OTPs depend on that number, but do not count on UPI to pay in Europe, where only a few merchants accept it. Turn on international use on your cards before you fly and keep your visa papers on the phone as offline files.

See the Europe eSIM

Your Indian SIM and a European eSIM, side by side

Apple's Indian specifications for the iPhone 17 list Dual SIM with a nano-SIM and an eSIM, plus support for two eSIMs at once. In practice, your Indian card stays in the tray and the European data eSIM goes in next to it. The iPhone Air is the exception: Apple's Indian page says it uses eSIM only and is not compatible with physical SIM cards, so your Indian number has to move to an eSIM, and the phone keeps two eSIMs active.

With Android phones sold in India, eSIM support depends on the exact model, so read the phone rather than the box: an EID under About phone means it takes an eSIM, as shown in checking eSIM support. It also has to be unlocked. If there is no EID, a dual-SIM phone can still take a physical European SIM in its second slot, with your Indian card in the first.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Why the Indian number has to stay in the phone

Indian payment apps are tied to the mobile number registered with your bank. Google Pay's Indian help pages explain that your Google Pay number must match it and that the bank account is verified by an SMS sent from that SIM: on a single-SIM phone the active SIM must carry that number, and on a dual-SIM phone the SMS must go out from the SIM linked to the account. NPCI also limits those verification messages to three attempts in 24 hours.

So set up or re-verify UPI apps in India, not from a hotel in Rome after changing phones or SIM slots. During the trip, keep the Indian line on so bank OTPs arrive, with mobile data and data roaming off on it, and let the eSIM carry the data; WhatsApp keeps your Indian number. Ask your operator what incoming SMS cost while roaming, and see getting bank SMS codes abroad for the settings.

UPI in Europe: a few counters, not the high street

UPI abroad only works where a merchant has been signed up through NPCI's international arm. NPCI announced acceptance in France starting with tickets for the Eiffel Tower, through the French payment company Lyra, and later at the Galeries Lafayette flagship store in Paris. Google Pay's Indian help page, which lists the countries where you can pay with it, names Bhutan, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates, and no European country.

Where it is accepted, Google Pay describes the steps: scan the merchant's QR code, enter the amount in the local currency, choose a bank account and tap Activate UPI International. Only accounts that support UPI International can be used, and your bank converts the amount to rupees and charges a fee for it. Treat UPI in Europe as a bonus and plan to pay by card.

Cards: international use stays off until you turn it on

Under the Reserve Bank of India's directions on card security, cards are issued and reissued enabled only for contact use at ATMs and point-of-sale terminals within India. International use at terminals, online payments and contactless have to be enabled, and banks must let cardholders switch each of them on or off and set limits. Cards that have never been used abroad, online or contactless may have had those rights disabled by the bank.

That is why a card that has worked for years at home can be declined at a shop in Paris or a café in Barcelona. Before you leave, switch on international transactions and contactless for every card you will carry, usually in the bank's app or net banking, set limits that fit the trip, and keep the Indian line reachable for the OTPs of online payments. For paying with the phone itself, see paying with your phone abroad.

Schengen papers you can open without signal

Your Schengen visa is in the passport, but border guards can ask for more. The EU's Your Europe portal mentions justification of the purpose of the stay, proof of sufficient means, and supporting documents such as an invitation letter, proof of lodging or a return ticket. The visa itself required travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation, with minimum cover of 30,000 euros under the EU Visa Code.

Keep all of it on the phone as files that open without a connection: hotel bookings, return ticket, insurance policy and any invitation letter, plus a photo of the passport and visa pages. Our guide to keeping travel documents offline shows where to save them, and the EES and your phone covers the EU's entry and exit system. At passport control the eSIM may not have connected yet, so do not depend on your inbox.

The evening before the flight

  • Find the EID in the settings and confirm the phone is unlocked.
  • Install the European eSIM on home Wi-Fi and give the line a clear name.
  • Switch on international and contactless use on each card.
  • Re-verify UPI and bank apps on the Indian SIM if you changed anything.
  • Save visa papers, bookings and the insurance policy as offline files.

On landing, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn data roaming on for it only. A trip that stays in one country, such as France, can use a France eSIM, while a Schengen route through several countries fits Snoozim's Europe pack, which covers 33 of them on one eSIM and starts counting at the first connection there.

Questions
Do iPhones sold in India have eSIM?

Yes. Apple's Indian iPhone 17 takes a nano-SIM and an eSIM, and the iPhone Air sold in India works with eSIM only.

Can I pay with UPI in Europe?

Only at the few merchants signed up through NPCI's international arm, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Plan to pay by card.

Why was my Indian card declined in Europe?

RBI rules have cards issued for domestic use only. Turn on international and contactless use in your bank's app or net banking before you travel.

Will I get OTPs on my Indian number in Europe?

Yes, if the Indian line stays switched on in the phone. A data-only eSIM has no number, so OTPs never arrive there.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
