How much data does Telegram use?

Telegram publishes no per-hour figure, but it counts its own traffic inside Settings, Data and Storage, with mobile data and Wi-Fi kept apart. The same screen decides what downloads on its own: photos, videos and files can be limited separately on mobile data, on Wi-Fi and, in the Android app, while roaming. A proxy changes how you connect to Telegram, not how much you download.

Telegram keeps its own meter

Telegram added a usage section to Data and Storage with travellers in mind: its announcement described it as showing how much data you consumed while roaming or on Wi-Fi, and suggested getting on the hotel Wi-Fi before any serious Telegramming abroad. On iPhone it shows mobile data and Wi-Fi separately, each counted from the date of the last reset, and breaks the total down into messages, photos, videos and audio. Depending on the version, the screen is called Network Usage or Data Usage.

That breakdown answers the question better than any average could. Reset the statistics the day you arrive, and after a day you know whether your Telegram is mostly text, which costs very little, or mostly videos from groups and channels. WhatsApp has a similar counter, explained in our WhatsApp calls guide, so if you use both apps you can compare like for like.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

Three networks, three sets of rules

Telegram's automatic media download is the setting that matters most. In the Android app it is split into three groups: When using mobile data, When connected to Wi-Fi and When roaming. Each one lets you decide separately about photos, videos and files. On iPhone the auto-download screens are split into cellular and Wi-Fi. Telegram also offers Low, Medium and High presets for each network, and remembers your own choices as a Custom preset.

Inside each group you can go further: by chat type (contacts, other private chats, groups and channels), by media type and by file size, with an upper limit for what downloads by itself. One detail is easy to miss. Telegram says its default limits depend on how affordable mobile data is in your country, and that it can change them remotely. So do not assume what your phone is set to: open the screen and look before you travel.

Mobile data or roaming? Set both the same

A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a visitor, so phones usually show it as roaming. Whether Telegram then applies your mobile data rules or your roaming rules depends on how the phone reports the connection, so the safe move on Android is to give both groups the same limits. Otherwise you can carefully restrict mobile data and still find videos downloading under the roaming settings.

The groups worth restricting are channels and big group chats. A family chat during a wedding weekend or a channel that posts match highlights can push dozens of videos a day at you. A setup that works on a trip: photos from contacts and private chats on, videos only up to a small size, files off, and channels with nothing automatic at all. Everything is still there; it just waits until you tap it.

Tapping still costs: streaming, autoplay and calls

Turning off auto-download does not stop a video using data once you open it. Telegram's Stream Videos and Audio Files option starts playback before the file has fully downloaded, so you pay as you watch, and closing a long video early does save something. Telegram also autoplays smaller videos without sound when they reach your screen; the Android app has an Autoplay media section with separate switches for GIFs and videos if you would rather they stayed still.

Calls have their own setting. In the Android app it is called Use Less Data for Calls, and its options include Never and Only while roaming. Telegram does not say how much it saves or what happens to the sound, so treat it as a fallback for a weak or small data connection rather than something to leave on by default.

Clearing the cache before you leave can backfire

Telegram stores your media in its cloud and keeps a local cache on the phone. Under Storage Usage, the Keep Media setting removes photos, videos and files you have not opened for a chosen period, and Telegram is clear that they stay in the cloud and download again when you open them. Clear Cache does the same at once, and its FAQ notes that it frees space without logging you out.

The catch on a trip is that downloading again uses data. If the hotel booking PDF, the ferry tickets or the photo of your passport live in a Telegram chat, open them on Wi-Fi before you leave so they are on the phone, and do not clear the cache the night before. If space is tight, clearing it at home and then reopening the few files you will need is a better order than the other way round.

Proxies: for reaching Telegram, not for saving data

Every Telegram app can connect through a proxy. On Android it is in Settings, Data and Storage, Proxy Settings, at the bottom of the page; on iPhone, Settings, Data and Storage, Proxy. Telegram supports two types: SOCKS5, which needs a server and port and sometimes a username and password, and MTProto, which always needs a server, port and secret. Telegram's advice is to use proxies only from a source you trust.

Two details from Telegram's own documentation are worth knowing. After connecting to an MTProto proxy you may see an unfamiliar channel in your chat list, promoted by the proxy operator to cover server costs; Telegram says the operator cannot see your chats or activity. And the app warns that proxy servers may degrade call quality, which is why there is a separate option to use the proxy for calls. Nothing in that documentation says a proxy reduces data use.

Your Telegram number on a data-only line

A travel eSIM without a phone number does not change anything about your Telegram account. Telegram's FAQ says that if you use a new number only for a limited time, for example on a trip, there is no need to do anything. If you need to log in on a new device while away, Telegram may send the login code inside Telegram on a device where you are already logged in, instead of by SMS. Keep at least one device logged in before you leave, and keep your home SIM in the phone if it has two slots.

Questions
How much data does Telegram use?

Telegram does not publish a figure. Its usage screen in Data and Storage shows exactly what you have used on mobile data and Wi-Fi, split into messages, photos, videos and audio.

How do I stop Telegram downloading videos on mobile data?

Go to Settings, Data and Storage and, under automatic media download, turn off or limit videos for mobile data. On Android, do the same under When roaming.

Does a proxy make Telegram use less data?

Telegram documents proxies as a way to connect, with SOCKS5 and MTProto types. Nothing in its documentation says a proxy reduces data use.

Do I need to change my Telegram number when I travel?

No. Telegram's FAQ says there is no need to do anything if you use another number only for a limited time, such as on a trip.

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
