How much data does Facebook use?

Facebook does not publish how many megabytes its app uses. Its help centre does explain where most of it goes: videos use more data than other posts, and with autoplay on mobile data the amount depends on how long you stop to watch. Setting autoplay to Wi-Fi only and turning on Data Saver are the two changes that make a difference.

Why Facebook gives no number

Netflix and Disney+ can publish a figure per hour because they stream one thing at a known quality. A Facebook feed is a mix of text, photos, links, videos and reels, and what you see is different from what anyone else sees, so a single number would mean little. Facebook does not try: there is no data table in its help centre.

What it does say is useful. Autoplay videos start as you scroll, videos use more data than other posts, and on mobile data the data used depends on how long you spend on each one. Scrolling past a video uses less than stopping to watch it. Facebook also notes that even with autoplay allowed on mobile data, you may have to tap a video to start it when the connection is slow or when you have used a large amount of mobile data recently.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

The three autoplay options

  • On Mobile Data and Wi-Fi: videos play by themselves on any connection.
  • On Wi-Fi Only: videos play by themselves on Wi-Fi; on mobile data you tap a video to start it.
  • Never Autoplay Videos: you always tap to play.

In the iPhone or Android app, tap Menu, then Settings & privacy, Settings, and Media under Preferences. Autoplay is further down that screen. If Media is missing, Facebook's advice is to update the app. On a computer, the path starts from your profile picture and ends in the same Media section.

For a trip, On Wi-Fi Only is the sensible setting. The feed still plays videos on the hotel Wi-Fi, and on the street nothing starts until you ask for it. Facebook is clear that a video you tap on mobile data uses mobile data, so the setting does not stop you watching anything, it only stops the feed deciding for you.

Data Saver and video quality

Video quality sits in the same Media screen. Facebook has moved the Data Usage section under Settings and Privacy, below Media, and describes Data Saver there as a way to lower the resolution of videos. It does not say how much less data each choice uses, so think of it as a setting for the videos you do decide to watch, while Wi-Fi only autoplay takes care of the ones you never meant to.

Facebook rearranges its menus from time to time, and its own help centre suggests using the search box at the top of Settings to find what you need. Typing Media or Data Saver there is quicker than following an old set of steps. If you also use Instagram, Meta's other app has its own data setting for preloading videos; the Instagram guide covers it.

Measure it across two days of the trip

Without an official figure, your phone's counter is the only reliable one. On an iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics; after a day, the Facebook line in the same list shows what it used on mobile data. On Android the per-app list lives in the network settings, and this guide shows where on each phone.

The useful test takes two similar days. On the first, use Facebook as you always do: the group chat about where to eat, a look at the feed on the tram, a few videos friends posted. On the second, switch autoplay to Wi-Fi only and turn on Data Saver, then read the counter again. The gap is what autoplay was costing you on your own feed. Someone who mostly follows friends' photos will see a small difference; someone whose feed is mostly reels can see a large one.

Facebook Lite, the lighter app

Meta also makes Facebook Lite. According to its help centre, Lite keeps only the main Facebook features, uses less mobile data and takes up less space on your phone, works on all networks including 2G, and loads screens more quickly. Meta's download instructions point to Google Play and the Facebook Lite website. On Lite, Data Usage stays directly under Settings and Privacy.

It is worth a thought if you travel with an older Android phone or spend time in places with weak coverage, such as rural areas or islands. If you rely on features the full app has and Lite does not, keeping the full app with Wi-Fi only autoplay is usually the simpler route.

Posting from the trip

The other half of Facebook's data use goes up, not down. Sharing a video sends the whole file from your phone, so a few long clips can outweigh a day of scrolling. Posting the long ones from the hotel Wi-Fi, and keeping mobile data for photos and quick updates, keeps the counter steady.

On a data-only travel eSIM, Facebook and Messenger work as they do at home: they only need a data connection, not your phone number. If your plan is small, the settings above matter more than the app itself; if you are still choosing one, the price list shows the packs by country.

Questions
How much data does Facebook use per hour?

Facebook does not publish a figure. It says videos use more data than other posts and that autoplay data depends on how long you watch, so the real number depends on your feed and is best measured on your own phone.

How do I stop Facebook videos playing on mobile data?

Go to Menu, Settings & privacy, Settings, then Media, and under Autoplay choose On Wi-Fi Only or Never Autoplay Videos.

What does Data Saver do on Facebook?

Facebook says Data Saver lowers the resolution of videos. You find it in Data Usage, under Settings and Privacy.

Does Facebook Lite use less data?

Meta says it does, and that it takes less storage too, because it keeps only the main Facebook features.
