How much mobile data does a day of remote work use?
Your calendar decides it, not your inbox. Microsoft designs a one-to-one Teams video call for 1.5 Mbps each way, which at that rate is about 1.35 GB an hour, while an audio-only call needs roughly 52 MB an hour. Email, chat and documents add comparatively little, so at Microsoft's recommended rates a day with two hours of video comes to roughly 2.7 to 5.9 GB, and a day of audio calls stays well under 1 GB.

Microsoft publishes the bandwidth Teams uses per device, in kilobits per second up and down. Converted to an hour at the recommended level, using the fact that 1 Mbps held for an hour is 450 MB, the figures look like this: audio, 58 kbps each way, about 52 MB an hour; one-to-one video, 1.5 Mbps each way, about 1.35 GB; video meetings, 2.5 Mbps up and 4 Mbps down, about 2.9 GB; screen sharing in a meeting, 2.5 Mbps each way, about 2.25 GB.
Microsoft is clear that these are design figures: actual use depends on the layout, resolution and frame rate, Teams can deliver HD video in under 1.5 Mbps, and when bandwidth is short it protects audio over video. Treat the hourly numbers as a ceiling for planning. Zoom and Google Meet publish their own figures, which we converted in how much data a video call uses.

Will it work on my phone?
On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.
On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.
It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

- 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.
Three working days, priced in data
- A writing day with one half-hour audio check-in: about 26 MB for the call, plus email and documents.
- Two one-to-one video calls of 45 minutes each: about 2 GB at the recommended rate.
- Three hours of group video meetings: up to about 8.8 GB at the recommended rate.
The spread is the point. The same job can cost a few hundred megabytes on a day of writing and close to 9 GB on a day of meetings, which is why a single daily figure for remote work is misleading. Look at a typical week of your calendar, count the hours of video and multiply. Most people find the answer is a handful of heavy days rather than a steady rate, and that is what the plan has to absorb.
Email, files and the cloud
Text is cheap; attachments and sync are not. In Gmail a personal account can send up to 25 MB of attachments, and anything larger is automatically turned into a Google Drive link, so the file only downloads if the recipient opens it. A day of messages therefore costs roughly the size of the attachments you open, and you can see those sizes before you tap.
The bigger risk is the laptop syncing in the background. On Windows, marking the connection as metered changes three things according to Microsoft: Windows Update downloads only priority updates, Microsoft Store downloads can pause and offline files may not sync automatically. OneDrive also pauses by itself on a metered network. The switch is in Settings, Network & internet, Wi-Fi, then the network you are on, under Metered connection. A phone's hotspot is a Wi-Fi network to the laptop, so you have to set it yourself; the wider list of what to pause is in our hotspot guide.
Making the calls lighter
Video is the lever, and it has two directions. Turning your own camera off removes your upload; turning off other people's video removes the download, and Teams has a Turn off incoming video option among its meeting controls for exactly that. In a big meeting where you only need to listen, both together bring the call close to the audio figure.
Screen sharing has its own rule. Microsoft notes that sharing your entire screen uses more bandwidth than sharing a single window, so when you present, share the document or the app rather than the desktop. And if a call is struggling on a weak signal, audio-only is not a downgrade to be embarrassed about: Teams itself gives audio priority over video when bandwidth runs short, so the connection is telling you the same thing.
Measure on the first day
Published figures are ceilings, so the number that matters is yours. Windows keeps a per-network count under Settings, Network & internet, Advanced network settings, then Data usage. Connect the laptop to the phone's hotspot on the first morning, work normally, and check the figure in the evening. The phone's own mobile data counter will show the same traffic, because everything the laptop does on the hotspot goes through the phone's plan.
One day of real use, with your calls and your apps, is a better guide than any table, including this one. If the first day comes out higher than expected, look at what ran in the background before cutting the calls. Our guide on USB tethering or Wi-Fi hotspot covers the choice of connection itself.
Choosing the plan for a working trip
Add up the video hours for the stay, convert them with the figures above, and leave room for the days the plan changes. The data calculator asks about the laptop and video use and suggests a size. A Snoozim eSIM allows the hotspot, so the phone can carry the laptop, and it can be topped up without reinstalling anything if the meetings pile up; the work trip guide covers invoices and expenses.
Because the eSIM is data only, your number stays on your usual line for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working with it. The data starts counting at the first connection at the destination, so you can set it up on a quiet evening at home rather than on the morning of the first meeting.
How much data does a one-hour Teams video call use?
At Microsoft's recommended bandwidth for a one-to-one call, 1.5 Mbps each way, about 1.35 GB. Group meetings can reach about 2.9 GB an hour at the recommended level.
How much data does a Teams audio call use?
Microsoft's recommended rate for audio is 58 kbps each way, about 52 MB an hour.
Is 10 GB enough for a week of remote work?
It depends on video hours. At the recommended Teams rates, 10 GB covers around seven hours of one-to-one video, or many more hours of audio calls, email and documents.
How do I stop my laptop using too much data on a phone hotspot?
On Windows, set the hotspot network as a metered connection, which limits updates and pauses OneDrive. Then pause other cloud sync and close what you are not using.
