What to do with your travel eSIM when you get home

Make your own line the mobile data line again, switch the travel eSIM off and check that data roaming is off on your own line. Keep the eSIM installed unless you are selling the phone or know you will not use it again: a switched-off prepaid line costs nothing and may save you an installation next time. On an iPhone with iOS 26 part of this happens on its own; on Android you do it yourself.

Five steps, in this order

  • Set your own line as the line for mobile data.
  • Switch the travel eSIM off. Do not delete it.
  • Check that data roaming is off on your own line.
  • If you chose a network by hand during the trip, set network selection back to automatic.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off for a moment and load a page, to confirm data now comes from your own line.

Choosing the data line first means that when the travel line goes off, the phone already has somewhere to send data, and the last step tells you whether anything was missed. The fourth one is the step people forget: a network picked by hand abroad stays picked, and Google's advice is to turn automatic selection back on when you return home. The details are in manual vs automatic network selection.

None of this touches your number. Calls, SMS and WhatsApp were on your own line all along.

Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

How it works

  1. 1Choose and payCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No account.
  2. 2Install it at homeThe QR arrives by email. Scan it on wifi in a minute.
  3. 3Connect when you landTurn on data roaming for the eSIM and you are online.

On an iPhone, check what it did for you

Apple says that with iOS 26 and later, if you are using a travel eSIM, the iPhone turns it off automatically and turns your home SIM back on when you return, depending on your country or region. You should get a notification when that happens; the arrival side of the same feature is covered in the travel eSIM prompt on iPhone.

If no notification appears, do it by hand. Apple's route is Settings, Cellular (Mobile Data or Mobile Service in some regions), then make sure Turn On This Line is enabled for your primary line and turn off any travel eSIM lines you no longer use. Then open Cellular Data on the same screen and select your own line.

If you set the travel line as your default for iMessage or FaceTime during the trip, switch that back too. Apple notes you can keep both on your home line while travelling, which is the simpler setup next time; iMessage and FaceTime with a travel eSIM explains how.

On Android, it is up to you

On a Google Pixel, open Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, and under Your primary SIMs set Mobile data to your own SIM. Then go to Network and internet, Mobile network, tap the travel eSIM and turn off Use this SIM. Google describes that switch as a way to turn a SIM off temporarily; the profile stays installed.

On a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings, Connections, SIM manager. Samsung's US guide turns a SIM on or off with the switch next to it, so switch off the travel eSIM there. In the same menu, set the preferred SIM for mobile data to your own line, or do it from the quick panel by tapping Mobile data and choosing the SIM.

Other Android brands use similar words. Typing SIM into the search box at the top of Settings usually takes you to the right screen. Whatever the brand, the button to avoid is the one that removes or erases the eSIM.

Your own line's roaming switch, set for next time

At home your own line is on its own network, so its data roaming switch does nothing day to day. Its job starts on the next trip. If you turned it on abroad and left it that way, the line is free to use mobile data the next time you cross a border, before you have even thought about a travel eSIM.

That can happen without you choosing it. Samsung's Latin American guide notes that a Galaxy can use the other SIM for data if the preferred SIM cannot connect to the network, and other phones have similar options. With roaming off on your own line, that fallback has nowhere expensive to go.

So leave it off now, and switch it on only when you have decided to, for example inside the EU if your plan includes roaming there. The full reasoning, with ships and planes, is in how to turn off roaming on your home line.

Keep it or delete it

  • Keep it, switched off, if you might go back somewhere it covers. A country pack works only in that country; a regional one, such as a Europe pack, in all its countries.
  • Keep it if you will still have the same phone. An installed travel eSIM stays on the phone where it was installed.
  • Delete it when you sell, trade in or give away the phone, the moment Apple itself recommends.
  • Delete it when its plan is over, you will not top it up and the list of lines has become confusing.

Keeping a line pays off when the provider can add data to it. With Snoozim, a top-up goes onto the eSIM you already have, so a return trip needs no new QR code. How top-ups work, and when a new pack is the better buy, is in how to top up a travel eSIM. Deleting is final, as what happens if you delete an eSIM explains, so if you are unsure, leave it off.

Before you file the email away

The order email is worth keeping even after the QR code has been used. It identifies the line if you ever need help or more data, and each Snoozim purchase comes with an invoice that includes VAT, which is what an expense claim usually asks for.

Give the switched-off line a name that says where it works, such as the country, so that the next time you look at the list you know which one to wake up. Renaming SIM lines takes a minute.

On the next trip the routine is the reverse of today's: switch the travel line on when you land, turn its data roaming on, set it for mobile data and check that the data counter moves on that line, as shown in checking data usage on a travel eSIM.

Questions
Does a switched-off travel eSIM cost anything?

No. A prepaid travel line that is off does not connect, and there is no contract behind it to bill you.

Will my phone switch back to my own line by itself?

On an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, Apple says it can, depending on your country or region. On Android, and if no notification appears on iPhone, do it by hand.

Should I delete the travel eSIM when its data runs out?

Only if you will not top it up and are not keeping the phone for another trip there. Deleting cannot be undone, so switching it off is the safer choice.

Do I need data roaming off on my own line at home?

It makes no difference at home, but leaving it off means your next trip starts without the risk of your own line using data abroad.

Get your eSIM before you fly: the QR arrives by email in minutes and the plan only starts when you connect at your destination.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
