Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

City guides in Portugal

Each one has its own guide: from the airport to the centre, where the signal drops and how much data you need.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Portugal

  • Vodafone 5G
  • NOS 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Portugal is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is built for visitors arriving from outside the EU — Brazil, the UK, the United States — where roaming is billed at international rates, and for long stays where you would rather not use up your home allowance.

Before you buy

Lisbon and Sintra, Porto and the Douro, or the coast to the Algarve

Most first trips to Portugal are Lisbon plus one more place. Three or four days in the capital with a day out to Sintra need no more than the 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days. Add Porto, with the train between the two cities and a day up the Douro valley, and the week becomes a 5 GB trip: tickets, the map and photos, nothing heavy.

A two-week drive in a hire car from Lisbon down the Alentejo coast to the Algarve, with the phone navigating all day, is where 10 GB means you stop rationing. The 20 GB pack is for a month in the country and, like the 5 and 10 GB ones, runs for 30 days, which leaves room if a week on the beach turns into two.

Walking the Camino Portugués to Santiago

Many pilgrims start the Portuguese Way in Porto or Lisbon and walk north to Santiago de Compostela. The route crosses into Spain on the bridge over the Minho between Valença and Tui, and from there the Portugal pack has no data. The last stages, from Tui to Santiago, are in Galicia, which is exactly when you check the map and the hostels most.

For the whole walk, the Europe pack covers Portugal and Spain on the same eSIM, and its 10 and 20 GB sizes last 30 days, so the count does not run out halfway along a long Camino. If you only walk the Portuguese stretch, the packs above are enough. For the Galician part on its own there is a Spain eSIM.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Portugal. For about 3 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Portugal, answered

I have no data near the Spanish border. Why?

Along the Minho and the Guadiana, at Valença or Vila Real de Santo António, a phone can pick up a Spanish network from the other bank. The Portugal pack does not work on Spanish networks and charges nothing there: choose a Portuguese network by hand in the phone settings and the data comes back.

I am coming from Brazil. How much does that change?

Quite a lot. Brazil sits outside the European Union, so your operator bills Portugal as intercontinental roaming, usually per day of use or per megabyte and at steep rates. This eSIM is a local Portuguese plan: you pay once, you know what it costs, and there is no surprise bill waiting when you get home.

I am working remotely from Lisbon for a month. Which pack?

The 20 GB pack, which lasts 30 days, covers a month of email, messaging and the occasional video call shared with the laptop over the hotspot. If your job means hours of video calls every day, work it out with the data calculator before you choose.

I am visiting Portugal and Spain. One pack?

Not this one: it covers Portugal only. The 33-country Europe pack covers both — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
