Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

What 4G and 5G change in practice

For maps, messaging, email and social media the difference is small — 4G handles all of it comfortably. 5G shows up on large downloads and when uploading video. If a network here is listed as 4G, nothing you normally do while travelling will feel slower.

So how many GB for a week?

At 300 MB a day a week comes to about 2 GB, which is why the 3 GB pack covers most short trips. Add video most evenings and you are closer to 8 GB for the same week. If you are unsure, the calculator asks five questions and works it out.

Ireland is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There is a single network in the feed here, Eir, on 5G: that means there is no second one to fall back on where it does not reach, which shows up more on the west coast and inland than in Dublin.

Travelling to Ireland, answered

Do I need an eSIM if I am coming from Spain or France?

Probably not. Ireland is in the European Union and EU roaming covers your data. It is worth it if you are arriving from outside the EU, or if your plan has a small allowance and the trip is long.

Which network do I connect to in Ireland?

Eir, on 5G. It is the only network available here, so you have coverage wherever Eir does and there is no second option to switch to if it fails.

Does it work outside Dublin?

You connect to the same physical network an Irish SIM uses: wherever Eir reaches, so do you. There are coverage gaps in rural areas and on the west coast, and no eSIM fixes that, because the problem is the mast and not the card.

I am visiting Ireland and Northern Ireland. Does this work?

No. Northern Ireland is the UK and left the EU with Brexit, so this pack does not cover it. The 33-country Europe pack includes both, and that is the one to take if you are crossing.
