Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Slovakia

  • Orange 5G
  • O2 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Slovakia is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are two networks, Orange and O2, both on 5G. Bratislava sits right next to Vienna, and the High Tatras are the opposite: real mountains, with the gaps that implies.

Before you buy

Flying into Vienna for Bratislava

Many visitors to Bratislava never use its airport. They fly into Vienna, which lies between the two capitals, and take a bus from arrivals that reaches Bratislava in about an hour. That affects which pack you buy. A Slovakia pack does not work in Austria, so on that first stretch it simply waits, and its 15 or 30 days only begin when it connects on the Slovak side.

If Vienna is just where you land, the Slovakia pack is all you need. If you are also spending time in Vienna, or carrying on to Budapest, the Europe pack is the better buy: Austria, Slovakia and Hungary are all among its 33 countries, and the eSIM keeps working as you cross. Either way, install it at home from the QR code in your email before you fly.

Bratislava to Košice, by way of the Tatras

The classic route across Slovakia follows the main railway east: Bratislava, Žilina for the Malá Fatra, Poprad for the High Tatras and Košice at the far end, with Spiš Castle and the Slovak Paradise as side trips. Ten days to two weeks on that line, with maps, train times and photos every day, is a 10 GB trip.

Shorter trips need less. A long weekend in Bratislava fits in 3 GB for 15 days, and a week based in one Tatra resort, Štrbské Pleso or Starý Smokovec, fits in 5 GB for 30 days. Go up to 20 GB if a laptop will run off the hotspot for a month. Everything on this route is inside Slovakia, so the country pack covers it from end to end. Mountain coverage is covered in the Slovakia guide.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Slovakia. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Slovakia, answered

I am landing in Vienna. When do I install the Slovakia eSIM?

At home, on wifi, from the QR code in your email. It does not work in Austria, so it stays idle on the way from Vienna airport and only starts counting when it first connects in Slovakia.

Will it work on the Polish side of the Tatras?

No. The pack runs on Orange and O2 in Slovakia only, so it stops once your phone is on a Polish network, up on the ridge around Rysy or down in Zakopane. For hikes that cross over, the Europe pack covers both countries.

Does it work in the High Tatras?

In the towns and resorts, yes. On high mountain routes there are stretches with no coverage, and no card fixes that: it depends on there being a mast.

Bratislava is next to Vienna. Does this cover both?

No, this one covers Slovakia only. It is forty minutes border to border, so if you are visiting both cities take the 33-country Europe pack.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
