Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in Malaysia

  • Maxis 5G
  • CelcomDigi 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Malaysia comes in two parts: the peninsula, with Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka and the Cameron Highlands, and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo, across the South China Sea. One pack covers both. This eSIM connects to Maxis and CelcomDigi, both on 5G, and your phone uses whichever has the stronger signal. Install it at home and it starts on its first connection in Malaysia. It is data only, so WhatsApp keeps your usual number.

Before you buy

Peninsula, Borneo or both

A classic first trip runs from Kuala Lumpur to the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands, on to George Town in Penang and ends with a few beach days on Langkawi. Ten days to two weeks of that, with maps through George Town's lanes and photos sent at night, fits the 5 GB pack, which lasts 30 days. The 3 GB pack lasts 15 days and is enough for a long weekend in KL or a stopover on the way to somewhere else.

Adding Borneo means extra flights to Kota Kinabalu or Kuching and days away from reliable wifi, so 10 GB gives you room. The 20 GB pack is for a month or for working from a laptop through the hotspot. If you run low, top up the same eSIM. The data calculator works out a figure for your route.

From KLIA onwards

Most international flights land at KLIA, in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, the terminal once called klia2. Install the eSIM at home over wifi, then switch on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land. The plan starts on that first connection, so you can check the train or book a car into Kuala Lumpur from the arrivals hall.

Flights to Sabah and Sarawak are domestic, yet they end at a passport check; the eSIM is not affected. What it does not do is cross borders. Malaysia is often one stop on a longer route through Southeast Asia, and for the next country you need its own eSIM: Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia or, from Sarawak and Sabah, Brunei.

Questions

Travelling to Malaysia, answered

Does it work in Sabah and Sarawak, on Borneo?

Yes. Both states are part of Malaysia and the same pack covers them. They run their own immigration checks, so you show your passport even after a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur, but the eSIM carries on without any change.

Can I use it on a day trip to Singapore from Johor Bahru?

No. Once you cross into Singapore the Malaysia pack stops working, so add the Singapore eSIM for that day.

Which pack for two weeks between KL, Penang and Langkawi?

The 5 GB pack, valid for 30 days, covers maps, ride-hailing and photos for two weeks. If you are back on hotel wifi every evening, the 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days, is enough.

Will I have signal at a rainforest lodge in Borneo?

Not necessarily. Sabah's state government says mobile service covers most major towns and tourist areas but may be limited or unavailable in extremely remote or heavily forested inland regions. Download maps and booking details before you head into the interior.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
