Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in Australia

  • Optus 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Australia is big, and most trips cover it by plane: Sydney, Melbourne, then Cairns for the reef or Uluru in the Red Centre. In the cities and along the main coastal routes your phone behaves much as it does at home. This eSIM runs on Optus, with 5G, and starts counting on its first connection in Australia. It is data only, so your usual number stays on the phone for calls and texts. Out in the national parks of the interior, expect gaps.

Before you buy

Cities, the reef or a campervan

A first trip often links Sydney and Melbourne with a few days in Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef, all joined by domestic flights. Two weeks of that, with maps in each city, rides to and from airports and photos sent in the evening, fits in the 5 GB pack, which lasts 30 days. The 3 GB pack runs for 15 days and suits a week in one city with hotel wifi at night.

A campervan along the Great Ocean Road or up the east coast is a different case: navigation runs for hours every day, so take 10 GB. The 20 GB pack covers a month on the road or working from a laptop through the hotspot. If the trip runs longer, top up the same eSIM instead of buying a new one. The data calculator gives you a figure for your own route.

Where the signal thins out

Install the eSIM at home over wifi. When you land in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line: it connects to Optus and the plan starts counting from that moment. In cities and towns there is nothing more to think about.

Inland it is another matter. Optus publishes a map of its predicted outdoor coverage and says it is an indication, not a guarantee, so check it against your route before a long drive. In the Red Centre, Parks Australia calls coverage inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta patchy, and Kakadu lists only certain spots with signal. Save offline maps and park guides before you leave town. If New Zealand or a stopover in Singapore is part of the trip, add that country's eSIM.

Questions

Travelling to Australia, answered

Will I have signal at Uluru?

At Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara, yes: Parks Australia says it is served by the major networks, Optus among them. Inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park the park itself describes coverage as patchy, so download its guides and your maps before you drive in.

Does it work in Kakadu?

Only in places. Kakadu's official site lists the spots that have mobile coverage, such as Jabiru, Cooinda and the Bowali Visitor Centre, and says the park has far less digital access than populated areas. It does not say which networks, so check those spots on the Optus coverage map before you go.

Which pack for three weeks between Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns?

The 5 GB pack, valid for 30 days, if you mostly use maps and messaging and have wifi where you sleep. If you add a campervan stretch or share data with a travel companion, take 10 GB.

I have a stopover in Singapore and then fly on to New Zealand. Does it cover those?

No. The packs only work in Australia, so the stopover and the next country each need their own eSIM.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
