Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Singapore is small, so most visits are short: a stopover between Europe and Australia, or four or five days of hawker centres, Marina Bay and Sentosa. Changi has free wifi across its terminals, so the eSIM matters from the moment you head into the city. It connects to M1 and SingTel, both on 5G, and starts on its first connection in Singapore. It is data only, with no local number, and it stops working as soon as you cross into Malaysia or Indonesia.

Before you buy

Stopover, city break or a month

A stopover of two or three nights, or a long weekend of Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown and an afternoon on Sentosa, uses little data: maps, Grab, the odd video call. The 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days, covers it with room to spare, and because the plan starts at the first connection in Singapore, you can buy it weeks ahead.

A week or more, or a work trip where you tether a laptop between meetings, is a 5 GB trip, and that pack runs for 30 days. Take 10 GB if you stream in the evenings or share the connection with someone travelling with you, and 20 GB if you are staying a month. Flying on afterwards? The Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam eSIMs are separate packs. The data calculator sizes it for your own plans.

Over the Causeway and across the strait

Install the eSIM at home with the QR code from the email and switch on its line and data roaming when you land at Changi. The MRT runs from the airport into town, and the underground lines have signal the whole way.

The border is where people get caught out. Buses from Woodlands cross the Causeway to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, and ferries leave HarbourFront for Batam and Tanah Merah for Bintan, both in Indonesia. On any of those trips you leave Singapore, so this eSIM stops giving you data until you are back. For a day across the Causeway, add the Malaysia eSIM; for a weekend on Batam or Bintan, the Indonesia eSIM. Sentosa, on the other hand, is part of Singapore, so the eSIM keeps working there. If you run low, top up the same eSIM without reinstalling.

Travelling to Singapore, answered

Is it worth it for a two-day stopover?

If you leave the airport, yes: Changi's free wifi stays in the terminals, and the city is where you need maps and a ride app. If you stay airside between flights, the airport wifi is enough and you can skip it.

Will it work on a day trip to Johor Bahru?

No. Johor Bahru is in Malaysia, across the Causeway, and this pack only works in Singapore. For that day you need the Malaysia eSIM.

Which networks does it use?

M1 and SingTel, both with 5G. Your phone picks whichever has the better signal where you are and switches by itself.

Do I keep signal on the underground MRT?

Yes. The underground lines have mobile coverage in stations and tunnels, under coverage standards set by IMDA, Singapore's telecoms regulator, so maps and messages keep working between stops.
