Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Latvia is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are two networks, Tele2 and LMT, both on 5G. Riga takes up most of the trip and has plenty of coverage; the Baltic coast and the inland parks depend more on where the masts fall.

Before you buy

Riga as your base, and the day trips that add up

Most trips to Latvia are Riga plus a handful of day trips, and those outings decide the pack more than the city does. Jūrmala is a short train ride to the beach. Sigulda and Cēsis sit on the railway into the Gauja valley. Rundāle Palace is a drive south towards Bauska, and Kuldīga, with its wide waterfall and old town, is a longer day out to the west. Each one means routes, timetables and photos away from the hotel Wi-Fi.

Three or four days in Riga with one outing fit in 3 GB, valid for 15 days. A week with three or four of those trips is where the 5 GB pack, valid for 30 days, earns its place. If you hire a car and loop the Kurzeme coast to Ventspils and Liepāja, navigation runs all day and 10 GB is the comfortable size. Not sure? The calculator sizes it from how you use your phone.

Studying or working in Riga for a month or longer

Riga's universities have many international students, and the city is a common base for remote workers spending a season in the Baltics. For the first weeks, before you have sorted out anything local, the 20 GB pack covers 30 days of daily use and lets you share the connection with a laptop, because hotspot is included.

Two limits are worth knowing before you rely on it. It is data only: there is no Latvian number, so anything that has to text a code to a local number will need a local SIM. And each pack runs for 30 days from its first connection, so a second month means a second pack. Is it worth it for a long layover at Riga airport?

If you leave the airport for a few hours in the old town, it can be: the 3 GB pack is plenty for maps and the ride into the centre. Bear in mind that it only works in Latvia, so it will not follow you on the next flight.

I am arriving overland from Lithuania or Estonia. When should I install it?

Before you set off, while you still have Wi-Fi. The Latvia pack only connects to Latvian networks, so it stays idle on the road and starts counting once you are over the border, with nothing to switch on there.

I am touring all three Baltic states. Does this pack work?

No, this one covers Latvia only. Estonia and Lithuania are separate countries: for the three-country route, the 33-country Europe pack is the practical choice.

How many GB for four days in Riga?

With maps, messaging and some social media, around 300 MB a day: the 3 GB pack is more than enough for that trip.
