Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Indonesia is thousands of islands, and many trips start in Bali, where you get around with Grab or Gojek, the ride-hailing apps for a car or a motorbike taxi, and they need data to book. This eSIM connects to Telkomsel and Indosat on 5G and to XL on 4G from the moment you land at Ngurah Rai. It is data only, so WhatsApp keeps your usual number. Plan around one exception: on Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, mobile data on the island is switched off for 24 hours.

Before you buy

Bali, the Gilis or a loop through Java

Ten days in Bali, between Ubud, the south coast and a boat to Nusa Penida, fit in the 3 GB pack if your villa has good wifi; it lasts 15 days. If you book every ride through an app and send videos home, the 5 GB pack, valid for 30 days, is the comfortable choice.

Two or three weeks combining Bali with Lombok and the Gili Islands, or a route through Java from Yogyakarta to the volcanoes in the east, is a 10 GB trip: long transfers, maps open and plenty of photos. If you settle in Canggu or Ubud for a month to work, take 20 GB. The data calculator estimates your own trip, and if you carry on to Singapore or Malaysia, add that country's eSIM: these packs only work in Indonesia.

Nyepi, boat days and arriving

Once a year, on Nyepi, Bali stops for 24 hours, from 6 am to 6 am. The airport closes, visitors stay inside their hotels and the government asks the operators to switch off mobile data on the island. This eSIM runs on those same networks, so it goes quiet too, while hotel wifi stays on. If your dates fall on Nyepi, download what you need the day before.

On boat days, to Nusa Penida, the Gilis or Komodo from Labuan Bajo, the signal depends on how close you are to land, so save tickets and maps offline before you leave. Install the eSIM at home on wifi: it only starts counting when it connects in Indonesia. When you land at Ngurah Rai, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online inside the terminal.

Will mobile data work in Bali on Nyepi?

No. For the 24 hours of Nyepi, from 6 am to 6 am, mobile data in Bali is switched off at the government's request, and that includes this eSIM. Hotel wifi keeps working.

Does it work on Lombok, the Gilis and Flores, or only in Bali?

It works anywhere in Indonesia where Telkomsel, XL or Indosat have signal. On small islands and at sea, it depends on how close the nearest mast is, so download maps before boat trips.

Which pack for two weeks in Bali?

The 5 GB pack, which lasts 30 days, covers maps, ride-hailing and messaging for two weeks. If you work online or share the connection, take 10 GB.

Can I order a Grab or Gojek as soon as I land?

Yes: with the eSIM installed and data roaming switched on for its line, the apps have data from the moment the plane is on the ground. The eSIM has no Indonesian number, so your accounts keep the number you signed up with.
